Note: The next Deputy Sheriff Recruit Course will take place in Prince Albert September 11th, 2023. Successful candidates requiring this course will not commence employment until that date.

Deputy Sheriffs provide security services as assigned within the Courts of Saskatchewan to ensure a safe and secure environment for all users of court facilities. This includes secure prisoner transport, the operation of detention areas within court facilities, conducting perimeter screening in accordance with the Court Security Act, 2007, the maintenance of good order in all areas of court facilities, and the assessment and management of threats to courts and court participants. The duties performed by the Deputy Sheriffs are an integral component of the administration of the court and in achieving the goals and objectives of the Court Security Branch.

Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for the safe and timely transportation of persons to and from court locations across the province (e.g., correctional centers, RCMP detachments, municipal police agencies, etc.). They are also responsible for ensuring documents are accurate for persons being released and/or held in custody and information is kept confidential at all times.

As Peace Officers, Deputy Sheriffs operate under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Court Officials Act, 2012, and the Court Security Act, 2007. Additionally, Deputy Sheriffs as Special Constables have authority under The Police Act 1990. They are armed with force option tools and may be required to use necessary force while performing their duties to protect people from harm.

Prior to being hired as a Deputy Sheriff, a candidate will be required to:

  • Produce a valid certificate in Standard First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Level C.
  • Produce a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 driver's license.
  • Produce a driver’s abstract obtained within the previous three months which demonstrates a safe and responsible driving record.
  • Successfully pass the Sheriff Officer Physical Abilities Test (SOPAT) with an elapsed time of four (4) minutes and 45 seconds (4:45) or less.
  • Have a satisfactory psychological assessment based on the Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2).
  • Have a satisfactory criminal records check in accordance with the Government of Saskatchewan Criminal Records Check Policy.

Once hired, successful candidates will be required to attend and successfully pass a mandatory Deputy Sheriff Recruit Course (DSRC), including becoming provincially certified to carry a firearm and completing Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) and Defensive Tactics. Training is approximately eight weeks (Monday to Friday) and will take place in Prince Albert.

The successful candidates will have knowledge of the justice system/law enforcement. Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position are obtained through relevant work experience in the justice system, law enforcement, court/legal-related environments and may be combined with relevant education in criminal/human justice or human science programs.
