Position Summary

Reporting to the Foreman, Roads Services, the Labourer I is responsible for performing a wide variety of manual tasks within the Roads Services Business Unit under the Infrastructure Management Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team. This position receives directions verbally and/or in writing and requires motivation working under minimum supervision. This position requires scheduled shift work. Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:
  • Spring clean-up (sweep City streets, parking lots and highway medians).
  • Maintenance of roads (crack sealing, asphalt patching).
  • Sign repair (wash, new installation).
  • Catch basin cleaning.
  • Operation of light duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist in the operation of the Transfer and Recycle Station as required.
  • Assist with meter reading, shop clearing, and general yard clean-up as required.

Qualifications

The successful candidates will have a Class 5 Operator’s License. Previous experience in road maintenance would be considered an asset. Good organizational and excellent customer service skills, with the ability to adapt to emerging situations and changing priorities are essential. This is a physically demanding position; incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions. This position requires your commitment for the duration of the season.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. Candidates are required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly

Duration: Immediately to September 1, 2023
