Overview:

Junior Lawyer – In House

Sureway is one of Alberta’s largest heavy construction contractors, with over 50 years’ experience, involved in; civil earthworks and grading, utilities and offsite, mine operation and aggregate extraction.

Reporting to the In-House General Counsel, the Junior Lawyer will be responsible for providing legal advice and risk management on a wide array of legal issues across the corporate group with a primary focus on the Heavy Construction and Infrastructure industry. The Junior Lawyer will provide guidance and opinions on certain best industry practices and will ensure compliance as required.

Junior Lawyer Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Ensure Compliance with Government Legislation.
  • Advise on legal responsibilities.
  • Identify Risk.
  • Oversee Risk Management activities.
  • Review and Prepare legal documents.
  • Retain and manage and assist external counsel as required.
  • Maintain minute books and document files.
  • Research and prepare Memos.
  • Preparing, reviewing and negotiating company contracts, requests for proposals and other legal documents.
  • Consulting with management, commercial advisors, tax experts, accountants, HR, and marketing staff.
  • Negotiating and drafting commercial and contractual agreements and advising on employment matters.
  • Developing the organization's policies on industry-specific issues, corporate governance or regulatory affairs.
  • Liaise with Senior Staff.

Junior Lawyer
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:
  • Must be a member in good standing of Law Society of Alberta.
  • Licensed to practice law in Alberta.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience in a firm.
  • Strong knowledge of legal concepts, principles, and terminology.
  • Critical thinking, analysis, and research skills are essential.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply legal documentation, laws or legislation.
  • Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive or private information with tact and discretion; knowledge of data privacy laws.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and mentality to interact with management, coworkers, and external agencies across a wide variety of topics in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Excellent writing skills, including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation for complex documentation.
  • Superior time management skills, multi-tasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
  • High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning, and diplomacy.
  • Resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Professional, responsive, and positive work attitude is critical.
