Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

The GNWT Access and Privacy Officer provides leadership and expert-level advice in the administration of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATIPP Act). The incumbent is responsible for supporting all GNWT departments, boards and agencies to ensure compliance ATIPP matters. The position allows the GNWT to standardize government-wide processes and implement best practices in a more efficient and effective manner.

The GNWT Access and Privacy Officer manages a team of five and provides leadership, strategic direction, and expert advice to senior level management. The incumbent is responsible for:

  • Development, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures and guidelines related to the application of ATIPP Act
  • Identifying, developing, and implementing new or revised legislation and making legislative proposals
  • Ensuring that the objectives of the Policy and Planning Division are met, developing and implementing performance goals and measurements
  • Designing, developing, and coordinating ATIPP training sessions within the GNWT

The position requires the ability to prioritize and use discretion related to sensitive matters. Attention to detail and the ability to concentrate are crucial to ensure utmost accuracy and compliance. The incumbent must have expert knowledge of access and privacy legislation, policy development and legislative processes.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by a degree in law or other relevant university degree, plus a minimum of ten years progressively related experience in a policy, legislative or program setting, and at least five years of which is managing and supervising staff.
