As a Trainee Electro Mechanic, you will learn how to completely maintain the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) fleet, individual components, and subsystems. This position is responsible from a training perspective, the inspection, repair, overhaul and rebuild of Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) Fleet, individual components, and subsystems, as well as related shop and field work assigned. Utilizing a variety of tools and equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on all types of LRV motors and equipment. Primary duties include:
  • Installing and testing electrical components such as electrical heaters, control panels, switches, public address systems, electrical motors, electrical fans, compressors, generating apparatus, etc.
  • Identifying malfunctions, performance maintenance requirements, through periodic inspections, operational testing, and operator reports.
  • Arranging for vehicles to be transferred to the shop and staged.
  • Conducting inspections, preparing estimates, etc. on potential work to be performed.
  • Carrying out all maintenance activities and tasks related to inspection, overhaul, repair, rebuild or replacement of apparatus and components of LBR’s deemed necessary by the Foreman.
  • Conducting operational testing on vehicles, equipment, etc. following modifications, repairs, overhauls, rebuilds, and maintenance to ensure efficient and safe operation.
  • Complete post work paperwork and ensure that all documentation required has been completed.
  • Participate in health and safety meetings and work groups, and ensure that any defective equipment is reported promptly.
  • Ensures that equipment and supplies that are utilized meet with the standards and expectations and are used as directed.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • A related Journeyman Certificate as a Truck and Transport, Heavy-Duty, Automotive, Electric Rewind Mechanic OR;
  • A completed 2-year Electronics Engineering Technology diploma and Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) designation recognized by the City of Calgary.
  • A valid Class 5 Drivers License (not a Graduated Driver’s License) with no more than 6 demerits, and no suspensions or charges pending.
  • Experience with LRV equipment is a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose maintenance problems and provide problem solving assistance is a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated independent learning, and proficiency with data analysis is considered an asset.
  • A High School diploma or GED would be considered an asset.
  • Applicants must have the ability to meet and maintain the medical requirements for LRV operation, which are equivalent to a medical report for a Class 2 License.
  • Electro Mechanic Trainees must complete, pass, and maintain computer based modules, LRV rule book, and a LRV operator’s license without passengers. Failure to successfully complete and of the modules will automatically disqualify the trainee from continuing the program. Disqualified employees may re-apply after one year, and must repeat modules that have already been successfully passed.
  • A minimum of 80% on an electro-mechanical aptitude assessment exam is required in order to be considered for an interview. Only 1 aptitude test may be completed within a 12 month period.
  • Applicants must have the ability to obtain a City of Calgary Operator’s Permit.
Working Conditions: This position works in a garage environment, which can include exposure to vehicle fumes, heavy equipment, noise, and dust. Some work must be performed in tight spaces and in awkward positions, and requires the ability to lift 20 kg on a regular basis.
