Under the supervision of the Park Works Supervisor (PK2) the incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of physical tasks, involving the regular use of light and heavy duty equipment and hand tools related to maintenance, operations and construction activities within Spruce Woods Provincial Park District and occasionally other Provincial Parks within the Region.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and be willing to acquire and maintain a class 3 license with air brake endorsement within one year.
  • Must be willing and able to work statutory holidays, weekends and evenings and overtime as required as well as travel and working other outlying areas within the region
  • Must be physically able to perform duties of this position which may include working in outdoor conditions, occassional lifting of light and heavy items, bending, reaching, standing for long periods of time
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as/when required
  • Able to work with paints, solvents and chemicals

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience operating equipment and machinery( mowers, tractors, ATVs, snowmobiles, loaders
  • Experience performing routine maintenance and repairs to grounds maintenance equipment (tractors, mowers, gas powered trimmers, chainsaws, and ATV's)
  • Experience in performing grounds maintenance- mowing, landscaping, road work, snow clearing
  • Experience in performing janitorial and building maintenance duties
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound decisions
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision or as part of a team
  • Strong Interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with staff, the general public and stakeholders
  • Effective verbal communication skills

Desired:
  • Training and/or experience Workplace Safety and Health Act/Regulations and safe work practises.

Duties:
Operates equipment such as; 3 and 5 ton trucks with and without air brakes, pulling trailers, sewage truck, bi-directional tractor, ice resurfacer Snow Groomer for snoman trails, grader, loader, various tractors, light pickup & crew cab trucks, all terrain vehicles, mowers, sprayers, snowmobiles etc. Responsible for the maintenance of all park infrastructure including roads, trails, canoe routes, campsites, playgrounds, beaches, grass cutting, and emergency service duties within Spruce Woods Provincial Park and from time to time other areas within the Western Region. This work may include beaver dam removal, culvert installation, removal and/or cleaning, playground/structure installation, noxious weed control, brush clearing, gravelling and grading of roads, and parking lots, assisting with prairie management practices. Performs regular maintenance and minor repairs of all equipment as required and assists in major repairs to the equipment. This may include checking fluid levels, filter changes/cleaning, fluid change over, tire repairs, sharpening blades, changing twine, washing, sweeping, vacuuming and minor repairs/welds using tools such as air compressors, wrenches, screwdrivers, grinders, pressure washer, vacuum, etc. Ensures that the equipment is maintained to a high standard of operational readiness.
