Labourer II - Community Recreation Facilities up to 6 months

Edmonton's Recreation Centres feature world-class amenities, including aquatic areas, indoor tracks, fitness centres, a fieldhouse, fitness program rooms and basketball, badminton, tennis and volleyball courts. Contribute to the health, safety and enjoyment of all guests by helping to maintain the operations at these facilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Set up and take down equipment for facility events, programs and sports activities
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Perform summer season outdoor mowing, playground/picnic site maintenance, minor equipment repairs, comfort station cleaning and supplies, perform winter season snow removal using hand equipment, and sand cleaning
  • Assist contract custodial staff with overall facility cleanliness and sanitation of washrooms, shower rooms and locker rooms
  • Maintain cleanliness of all storage areas, mechanical areas, electrical rooms, corridors, bleachers and running track areas
  • Vacuum sweep, mop, strip, seal and wax floors as required or scheduled
  • Care for shrubs and flower beds, including watering, planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, cutting and clearings
  • Perform minor repairs on facility equipment and furniture Liaise with and assist customers with equipment and facility needs
  • Perform the daily facility opening and closing procedures
  • Provide a security presence throughout the facility
  • Maintain appropriate facility and equipment maintenance documentation
  • Report facility and equipment maintenance needs to the Operations Supervisor and call for Trades assistance in his/her absence
  • Liaise with and assist the Building Operator and Building Trades Maintenance staff
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Completion of 10th school grade
  • One year of labour experience in sports facilities operations such as maintenance, pool, fitness or other areas of operations, including interacting with and engaging the general public
  • Ability to safely operate the equipment and tools required for the position such as scrubbers, sweepers, snow blowers, lawnmowers, gators, snow sweepers and miscellaneous small electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, safety precautions, WHMIS and hazards involved in the construction and maintenance of specific assignments
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of environmental conditions, as dictated by Occupational Health and Safety and the Community Services Department regulations, policies and procedures, at all times
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and maintain simple records
  • Ability to work alone and problem-solve independently
  • Excellent communication, customer service, organizational, and prioritization skills are required
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C certification is a requirement of the position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
