POSITION FUNCTION

Perform a variety of tasks involving equipment operation, equipment servicing and yard maintenance.

KEY DUTIES
Operate an articulating loader and an excavator; operate trucks and tractors with special attachments to load, unload, backfill, rough grade and pile materials; operate a soil screener; provide orientation to other staff on equipment, attachments and work methods as required.

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report major repairs and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log, material slips and time sheet.

Perform service and maintenance on small engine equipment including lawnmowers, chippers, leaf vacuums; change oil and filters; check coolant levels and inspect belts and lines; remove, clean and replace defective components such as spark plugs; sharpen mower blades and prepare fuel mixtures; assist mechanics with repairs as required.

Perform yard maintenance duties such as maintaining daily fuel pump records; monitor, record and report thermal, oxygen and moisture content readings of the compost pile; clean and maintain yard and storage areas; assist with the loading of customer purchases such as soil and garden products, and with unloading waste material.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to maintenance schedules or requests for service or assigned by supervisor.
Work is reviewed upon completion.
Problems such as priority of work assignments and mechanical repairs to equipment are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Confined to the cab of vehicle. (frequent)
Eye, hand and foot coordination while operating multiple controls. (occasional)
Lift and move heavy equipment and materials. (occasional)
Mental Effort:
Short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment. (occasional).
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Normal.
Work Environment:
Exposure to dust, jarring and equipment noise. (frequent)
Work outside in all weather conditions. (occasional)
Exposure to used engine oil, grease, aerosol sprays and fumes including composting odours. (often)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and carry out job related instructions.
Operate industrial tractors, loaders and related attachments.
Repair and service equipment.
Maintain accurate records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Work safely on job sites.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Grade 10.
Formal training in the operation of an excavator. (30 hours)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
Experience:
3 years of related experience including equipment servicing.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, 40 hour work week
$33.35 per hour, Pay Grade 7
