Full-Time, 6 Month Term Contract

Are you interested in working with families who are new to Canada? Settlement Services is looking for a team member who can bring their resourcefulness, critical thinking skills, and energy as a Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS). This position is for those who want to positively impact the success of newcomers in our school system and community. It requires the talents of an individual who not only understands the Alberta school system and community resources but can work effectively across cultures with immigrants of all ages, as well as school staff. The successful candidate will act as a bridge for newcomer families as they learn about schooling in Canada and making the communities of Banff, Canmore, or Lake Louise their new home. This is a full time, 6-month, contract position with possibility of extension based on funding.

As the Settlement Services team member in the Bow Valley Schools, you develop and lead programs for immigrant students, parents, and school staff. With exceptional communication skills, you deliver individual and group sessions of “Schooling in Canada” parent orientations to all incoming immigrant families as well as other specialized school workshops. You will facilitate communication by acting as a liaison between families/schools/student/agencies and collaborate with the Learning Support Teams, ELL teachers/staff and advocate for immigrant students and families.

In this role, you will coordinate the entry and lead the reception of immigrant families into the school system and work alongside students and parents on their journey as they learn about life in Canada. This position requires a genuine interest in the success of newcomers to the Bow Valley, an ability to build trust relationship as well as a comfortableness working across cultures as you develop and lead school-based initiatives to support newcomers.

Your cover letter and resume should demonstrate your communication skills (both written and verbal), your exceptional ability to prioritize and stay organized, and your experience working across cultures and with diversity.

You are an experienced driver with a valid class 5 Alberta driver’s licence and can provide a clear driver’s abstract on hire. You will be required to provide a clear RCMP criminal background check with vulnerable sector clearance on hire. This is a 6-month contact position with possibility of extension.

For your safety and the safety of others, you will be required to demonstrate (in writing from a Health Services authorized site) that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as of your hire date.
