Lactation Consultant, Temporary Full-Time
Maternal Child & Population Health, Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, Grand Falls-Windsor

Definition of work: Promoting initiation and continuation of breastfeeding through in-service education for health providers, developing resources and educational material, initiating support networks, and developing and implementing promotional strategies. Providing clinical expertise on breastfeeding through assessment, counseling, and consultation; identifying and participating in research, program evaluation, and policy development. Duties for this position will be carried out in the community and institutional setting, with approximately half time of the position designated to each setting. This position reports to the Manager(s) of the Women's, Children & Obstetrics Unit in the Central Region. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:
  • Completion of a recognized lactation consultant program (minimum 300 contact hours) and certification with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)
  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, (or working towards their Bachelor's Degree in nursing will be considered)
  • A minimum of two (2) years recent experience working with breastfeeding families would be an asset
  • Applications will be accepted from nurses who have not completed a lactation consultant program and are not certified, however initially only those have completed a program and/or hold certification with the IBLCE will be contacted for an interview
  • A valid driver's license and use of private vehicle is required
  • Travel to various parts of the region will be required as needed
  • Flexible working hours may be required to meet client need as per the NLNU Collective Agreement
  • Skills required include demonstrated leadership and teaching abilities using adult learning principles, excellent oral and written communication skills, group facilitation skills and an in-depth knowledge and commitment to breastfeeding
  • A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position
  • A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.

Hours of work: 75 hours biweekly (Shift work may be required)
Salary: NS-31 ($37.15-$45.63)
