Business Support Services is seeking a highly motivated, results-oriented individual to fill a key position as a Senior GIS Specialist for remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). In this role, you will train, coach, and provide both technical and regulatory support to ministry pilots of RPAS, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones.

As the Senior GIS Specialist for RPAS you will:

  • Represent the ministry’s RPAS services and related spatial data interests;
  • Train the ministry’s remote pilots to operate in a consistent, professional, compliant manner to ensure that flights occur according to standard operating procedures;
  • Apply for and obtain the appropriate certificates or approvals from Transport Canada;
  • Research, plan, manage and fly RPAS missions when required and evaluate mission planning requirements for projects;
  • Process imagery data into mosaics and models using appropriate GIS software and methods;
  • Plan and prepare for service delivery alterations to remain compliant with changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations; and
  • Participate in government-wide drone working teams and report on aspects of RPAS activity for the ministry;

You will need:

  • Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing including skills in spatial analysis, stereo imagery processing and map application design. The ability to automate processes through workflows, models or scripting using ArcGIS software is an asset.
  • Certification in civil and commercial unmanned aerial systems through an accredited training provider (Ground School). Provide this with your application.
  • A Transport Canada Small Basic or Advanced RPAS Pilot certificate. Provide this with your application.
  • A Restricted Radio Operators Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC-A). Provide this with your application.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a full-size truck and tow a dual axle trailer.
  • Experience (2-3 years minimum) in the safe and compliant flight of rotary-wing RPAS, preferably DJI manufactured equipment, in accordance with Canadian federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and how to interpret and apply legislative/regulatory changes to provincial government RPAS operations.
  • Experience in teaching or instructing adult learners to use technology in a practical and safe way.
  • An energetic and positive attitude to collaborate on related topics with colleagues and working teams both inside and outside government.

The knowledge and skills for this position have likely been acquired through a degree in Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience. An understanding of the ministry’s RPAS operations and of the governments enterprise geographic information system and associated business activities would be an asset.
