Our seasonal outside workers perform diversified manual work entailing physical effort and agility in performing semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks for the Parks Operations department.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and/or procedures related to parks maintenance and construction activities.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, as well as safe work procedures, practices, methods, and materials involved in the work performed.
  • Knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes.
  • Skill in the care and operation of a variety of power and hand tools, materials, and equipment used in the work.
  • Ability to provide customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Ability to drive in non-standard areas and to safely maneuver vehicle under non-standard driving conditions.
  • Ability to plan and organize own workload and the ability to initiate operational adjustments based on service needs.
  • Ability to work with others and be able to use common courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in maintaining working relationships.
  • Ability to carry out oral or written instruction, take direction from a supervisor, and exercise some independent judgement and action in processing assignments.
  • Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public and project a positive image of the City at all times
  • Must be able to lift, carry and push in excess of 20kg (45 lbs) on a regular and/or repetitive basis.
  • Ability to work shift work including weekends.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by education, training, and/or experience in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscape Construction, Turf Management, Irrigation and other related asset management activities, such as washroom maintenance
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia and clean Driver's Abstract

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate, Red Seal or Diploma program in Parks related area
  • ISA Arborist Certification
  • Pesticide Applicators Licence

Working Conditions:

  • Routine light and heavy physical effort and capability is required to carry out duties, including regular and/or repetitive lifting of up to 20kg (45lbs).
  • Work requires regular exposure to traffic, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, noise, toxic chemicals, construction sites, excavations, and heavy equipment.
  • Work may also require exposure to minor and/or major disagreeable conditions or hazards including animal feces, needles/sharps, hazardous waste, and insects.
  • Work is performed in all weather conditions.

$30.23 per hour

Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, with possibility for weekend shifts. (Compressed Work Week).
