About Us


The Community Corrections and Release Programs Branch offers community based programs to adult and youth offenders through a network of 52 community corrections offices and 2 attendance centers located in 36 separate geographic locations in Alberta.


This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies for Probation Officer positions in various regional locations.

Role

Do you thrive in a challenging and dynamic work environment? Are you interested in playing an active role in offender rehabilitation and community safety? Then our Probation Officer roles are for you!

Under the direction of a Senior Probation Officer and Manager, you will be responsible for delivering a broad range of community corrections programs and services to adult and young offenders. You will ensure compliance of offenders with supervision orders issued by the Courts and engage with community stakeholders. Working through the effective framework of case management, you will use your skills to appropriately assess, formulate case plans, and apply Effective Practices in Community Supervision to support client behaviour change.

Using your advanced interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), you will conduct investigations, prepare reports, and attend court as required. In the community, you will conduct field visits and liaise with local Police, Courts, and Correctional Centres as required. You will build and maintain positive relationships with community counselling and programming resources, working with systematic barriers that affect individuals and community, and will promote a positive image of probation in the community. Superior time management and prioritization skills are imperative to effectively complete case management activities.

This posting will be used for Permanent, Temporary and Wage positions in the Calgary South and North District.

  • Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, interpret and process information for investigative and casework processes
  • Ability to adapt quickly and adjust to change; strong problem solving skills, and strategic thinking resulting in forward thinking solutions.
  • The ability to communicate professionally and objectively using a broad range of interpersonal communication styles
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable legislation, as well as the ability to follow and apply policy
  • Knowledge and ability in working with socially marginalized individuals and victims of trauma or intergenerational abuse.
  • A self starter mindset with the ability to work with little guidance
  • Personal resiliency and decision making skills
  • Own transportation to travel into the community to collaborate with community stakeholders
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and information

Qualifications

Correctional Service Worker 1: University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

  • Two year diploma in a related field plus 2 years related experience; OR
  • Completion of the in-service Criminal Justice Certificate plus 3 years related experience (applicable only to employees who have completed the certificate prior to it being discontinued on December 31, 2017).

Correctional Service Worker 2: University graduation in a related field plus 2 years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

  • Two year diploma in a related field plus 4 years related experience; OR
  • Completion of the in-service Criminal Justice Certificate plus 5 years related experience (applicable only to employees who have completed the certificate prior to it being discontinued on December 31, 2017).

Related diplomas or degrees including but not limited to the following fields will be considered:

  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Youth Work
  • Correctional Services
  • Justice Studies
  • Applied Justice
  • Criminology

Assets will be considered as follows:

  • Experience working in Community corrections.
  • Experience in providing casework/ counselling services/ programming services (example: behavior management planning, community corrections programs).
  • Experience working in a client service environment where you used creative problem solving and agility to de-escalate difficult situations such as in a bank, school, hospital, retail or restaurants may be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous populations and culture will be considered an asset.

Salary

Correctional Service Worker 1:
Bi-weekly: $2,260.78 to $2,922.13
Hourly: $31.18 to $40.31

Correctional Service Worker 2:
Bi-weekly: $2,461.10 to $3,182.34
Hourly: $33.95 to $43.89

Notes

This posting will be used for permanent, temporary, and wage positions in various regional locations. The roles will be full-time positions working 36.25 hours per week.

Travel may be necessary, therefore reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
