This is a full time, permanent position working 75 hours biweekly.

The Mineral Resources Branch of the Department of Energy Mines and Resources is responsible for the regulation of a sustainable mining industry in the Yukon. As a member of the Mineral Resources Branch management team, this position is responsible for managing the Major Mines team and contributing to Branch operations and development of key policies and practices that support an active regulatory circumstance for major mines projects in Yukon.

Reporting to the Director, Mineral Resources, this position is responsible for directing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating Unit program areas. This includes reviewing and recommending for approval mining development plans, operating plans, reclamation and closure plans and preparation of quartz mining licenses. This position is responsible for providing management leadership, coaching and mentoring to its staff of three Mining Technologists, located in Whitehorse. We are looking for a highly motivated and committed individual who has strong supervisory skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a solid understanding of the processes associated with successful program delivery. Strong leadership, team building, strategic thinking, influencing others and creative problem solving skills are essential to be successful in this key position.

Essential Qualifications

  • A science degree in natural resource management, environmental science, engineering or a related filed with a considerable amount of experience in mine development, reclamation or mining regulation.

Considerable and progressively more senior experience in the following areas:

  • Developing or evaluating technical mine plans (e.g. reclamation and closure);
  • Developing operational policy, implementing procedures relevant to organizational growth, and applying regulatory frameworks to mine projects;
  • Building constructive relationships within and outside your organization, including the development of successful partnerships with First Nations, communities, non-government organizations and other government departments;
  • Experience managing human resources, including: developing people, leading teams with diverse skills, mentoring, and performance management;
  • Experience working with the Yukon mining regulatory and assessment processes and the requirements under the Yukon Umbrella Final Agreement and Yukon First Nation Agreements would be an asset.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their competence according to the standards set within the Yukon Government Core Competency Framework.

This position requires a person with considerable knowledge of environmental and financial considerations in development and operation of mining projects.

Conditions of Employment: Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence
Job Requirements: Travel within Yukon is required, sometimes on commercial aircraft
