GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


Under general supervision and in all weather conditions, safely and competently operates and performs maintenance on assigned light equipment including, but not limited to dump trucks/Tandem, flusher trucks, sanders, street sweepers, self-propelled vibratory packers/rollers, road patching, tractors with implements, loader, snow blowers chainsaws and ploughing equipment used by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in year round maintenance and/or construction of streets, parks, roads and facilities. Will perform semi-skilled manual labour using a variety of hand/power tools and other equipment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Manually perform installation, maintenance, and repair of roadways, parks, walkways, catch basins, manhole access using hand and power tools. Required to lift and move heavy objects (tools and material) as part of performing these activities.
  • Perform signage, material preparation, and other activities in support of equipment operations.
  • Operate assigned equipment used in construction projects and the maintenance of streets, parks, roads and facilities (eg. street sweeping, loading material, etc.)
  • Clean, service and maintain assigned equipment and perform minor operational repairs and may be required to assist the mechanic in major equipment repairs.
  • Complete daily paperwork and equipment reports as requested detailing the condition of equipment and work performed and completes additional forms/reports as requested.
  • Report maintenance problems or any other undesirable conditions to the Team Lead or Supervisor.
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment.
  • Notify the Supervisor or Team Lead immediately if involved in an accident or incident resulting in any damage.
  • Will be required to perform general labour duties as required.
  • Must be familiar with methods and procedures, quality standards and safety manuals relative to each job being performed.
  • Some planning is required to ensure equipment is maintained and fuelled.
  • Will participate in the Winter Works Operations.
  • Ability to work shifts and weekends.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to detect minor defects in equipment used.
  • Ability to obtain the proper vehicle operator’s license.
  • Physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions, methods and techniques employed in the trucking and heavy equipment industry.
  • Must be able to demonstrate dependability and reliability.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • One (1) year of experience operating equipment and trucks related to municipal operations is required as per the following specifications:
    • Light Equipment Operator supporting Roads – One (1) year of experience on tandem truck and loader. This experience must include a minimum of 4 months on each piece, with the combined experience being at least 1 year.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check for review and acceptance.
  • A valid Class Three (3) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Q-endorsement (Air Brakes) is required.
  • A valid Class One (1) Operator’s Licence is an asset.
  • A safe driving record; any infractions will be reviewed.
  • Equipment field testing and/or competency testing will be required as part of the interview evaluation.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Auditory testing may be required.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends.
  • Valid First Aid certificate is required or a willingness to successfully complete within 60 days.
  • WHMIS training is required or a willingness to complete within 30 days.
