Assessment accommodation

Intent of the process
The Salmon Enhancement Program operates 23 salmon hatcheries and spawning channels that are an integral component in Canada’s effort to support sustainable fisheries. The Salmon Enhancement Program is conducting a hiring process seeking candidates for Enhancement Technician (GT-03), Fish Culturist (GT-02) and Assistant Fish Culturist (GL-MAN-05) positions. Staff members at these facilities are involved in all aspects of hatchery operations and fish production. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)
- A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
Degree equivalency
- Experience in equipment operation, maintenance or repair (for GL-MAN-05 only).
- Experience in general equipment operation and maintenance, such as pumps, boats, motors and other mechanical equipment (for GT-02 & GT-03).
- Experience working in outdoor environments. This could include working outdoors on fishery, forestry, and park projects or other labour relevant to hatcheries (for GL-MAN-05, GT-02 & GT-03).
- Experience organizing and supervising fisheries-related field projects (for GT-03 only).

- Graduation with a diploma/certificate/degree in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
Degree equivalency
- Experience operating and maintaining equipment associated with a fish culture facility.
- Experience in the collection of biological data.
- Experience in the operation of hatchery recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
- Experience in all aspects of Pacific salmon culture.
- Experience working at spawning channels.
- Experience in river swims for stock and habitat assessment purposes.
- Experience in strategic enhancement techniques (e.g. sea-pen rearing, off-site programs, lake and stream enrichment techniques, captive brood programs).
- Experience working cooperatively with First Nations, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Experience with stock assessment and habitat restoration projects.
- Experience in managing and maintaining hatchery data base systems (e.g. Excel, ENPRO).
- Experience in the implementation of fish health management plans as they relate to facility operation and aquaculture license requirements.
- Experience of alarm systems and standby procedures as they relate to fish hatcheries.

Reliability Status security clearance
- Must be willing to obtain and maintain valid Health Canada Medical.
- Willing and able to travel, occasionally for overnight durations.
- Willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions.

- Willing and able to participate in facility Occupational Safety & Health program and training.
- Must possess and maintain a valid BC driver’s licence.
- Willing and able to work on and offsite standby as required.
- Must be willing to obtain and maintain a standard first aid certification with CPR.
- Must be able to carry out field operation which may include but are not limited to traversing rough terrain, climbing stream banks and lifting of up to 20kgs.
