Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Water Resources, you will be involved in both office and field programs to assist primarily with the stormwater monitoring program as well as data analysis and technical reporting. This work contributes to the Section’s efforts to ensure the appropriate operation and maintenance of City stormwater management infrastructure while protecting, maintaining and/or enhancing the natural environment before, during and after the development of lands within the municipality. The incumbent will undertake monitoring activities related to stormwater infrastructure, valleyland areas and natural features (lakes, wetlands, etc.), conduct data analysis and reporting in support of the Water Resources Section monitoring programs, and assist with background research and site visits in support of various stormwater management projects. You will also attend public engagement events during and outside of regular business hours and provide technical support and research assistance to the Manager and other Water Resources staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct field monitoring and sampling activities of stormwater infrastructure, valleyland areas and natural features (lakes, wetlands, etc.)
  • Conduct data analysis and reporting of monitoring information
  • Background research and site visits in support of stormwater management projects
  • Provide technical support and research assistance to the Manager
  • Attend public engagement events during and outside of regular business hours

Education and Experience

  • Recent graduate or Senior student working towards a four year University Degree in a physical science such as Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Experience with implementing field programs, monitoring and report writing
  • Master’s Program would be considered an asset

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of, and demonstrated experience in applying, the principles of civil and water resource engineering and environmental management
  • Basic project management and problem solving skills
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Team player with effective interpersonal skills that is able to promote and maintain good client and public relations
  • Comfortable working outside (fieldwork) in all types of weather while handling larger equipment (zodiac boat); is able to exercise sound judgment when working in the field
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of GIS software
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic and creative team player
  • Experience in a municipal government setting would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
  • Possess your own CSA certified steel toe safety boots for fieldwork
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license
  • Access to a vehicle to conduct some field monitoring activities (mileage compensated)
  • You will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance
