Reporting to the Principal, the Student Support Assistant (SSA), in co-operation with the Student Support Teacher (SST) and the classroom teacher, assists in implementing education programs for students in class as required, supports the classroom teacher in behavior support strategies, participates in instructional team, school team meetings, and provides personal support as requested. The SSA will participate in professional growth activities, act in an professional manner and play integral role in supporting the delivery of the education program and student progress.

The key responsibilities for this position include: following established routines of the classroom, observe and record students behavior, provide students with feedback and reinforcement, assisting in monitoring student progress inside and outside of classroom and provide emotional support for students.The successful candidate will be required to be patient, flexible and adaptable. It is crucial that the SSA work to build trust, rapport and caring relationship with the students to whom they have been assigned. The SSA is expected to provide encouragement to students and support their development of independence.

The SSA must have a good written and oral communitcation skills in the languages of the instruction that may be required in assisting designated student(s) and good interpersonal skills, ability to work as a member of a cooperative team and have sound time management skills and basic computer literacy skills, and understading of privacy and confidentiality and the abilty to maintain strict confidentiality.

The requirements for the SSA position are typically met by someone who has completed high school or Adult Basic Education program equivelent to Grade 12 or higher.

Training in First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) would be considered an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
