General Information:

Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate, affordable housing, and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

Two temporary full time FireSmart Coordinator opportunities are available in the Emergency Management Division of the Community Services Department. While it is anticipated these temporary assignments will end in June of 2022, there may be an opportunity for an extension.

Reporting to the Emergency Program Coordinator, the FireSmart Coordinator will assist in the initial establishment of the Cowichan FireSmart program and its subsequent implementation. The position will manage objectives under the Community Wildfire Prevention Plan (CWPP) by planning, organizing, and facilitating FireSmart activities and educational programs to the public, including recruiting volunteer neighborhood FireSmart champions. The FireSmart Coordinator will lead the completion of FireSmart assessments, mitigation activities and post-mitigation assessments/scorecards for residential properties and community assets and infrastructure.
Qualifications:
Education/Training
Diploma or degree in Forestry, Resource Management, Emergency Management or related field

Experience
Some related FireSmart and/or wildfire management behaviour experience
Some related leadership experience including public promotion, facilitation, presentation delivery and volunteer management

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Occupational Certification
Valid First Aid and CPR
Valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ License – employee needs to have access to reliable transportation.
Certification as a Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) is strongly preferred (Course is free and available online in October).

Hours of Work:
The hours of work are 35 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work a variety of shifts to meet operational requirements including days, evenings and weekends.
Salary:
This position is unionized (CUPE Local 358) and is compensated at a wage rate, in three steps, of $34.72-$35.71-$36.79 per hour (2021 rates).
