Job Description:
The Prospect Researcher, Philanthropy is responsible for external prospecting and conducting high-quality, market research on prospects being targeted by the World Vision Philanthropy teams for significant gifts. Using advanced investigative research, data collection, financial and statistical analysis skills and a wide range of sources s/he proactively identifies, researches and assesses prospective donors for the Major Gifts, Middle donors, Corporate and Foundations teams. S/he locates, assesses, interprets, disseminates, and directs information about prospects, donors, patrons, friends, and organizations and assists Advisors with cultivation strategies for the purpose of securing philanthropic support for World Vision Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Prospect Identification and Pipeline Development
  • Proactively identify new major gifts, corporate and foundation prospects using external information, external data mining, persona matching, extensive relationship mapping, etc.
  • Monitor community, national, international news and developments, and use industry best practices to identify potential individuals and organizations that could support World Vision.
  • Collaborate and partner with fundraising teams to identify and qualify external prospects and build strategies to capture giving potential.
  • Using a broad spectrum of resources, research, organize, and evaluate a prospect’s financial capacity, ability to give, inclination to give, charitable interests, and connection to World Vision Canada’s mission.
  • Using knowledge of donor moves management, major/comprehensive campaigns and development cycle, proactively seek new donors/influencers to accelerate call to actions at each stage of the donor cycle and participate in monthly pipeline meetings.
  • Administration of the prospect clearance process.
  • Provide support for the maintenance, tracking and reporting on donor Opportunities and other database updates.
  • Compile geographically focused prospect lists for fundraising efforts such as events or targeted campaigns and assist in formulating engagement strategies.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in the prospect development field through list serves, professional development opportunities, readings, and professional associations.
  • Automate search and mapping for increased operational efficiency.
Prospect Research
  • Produce in-depth, timely, well-written, confidential snapshots and profiles on prospects utilizing a wide range of sources, including complex web queries, vendor subscriptions (e.g., iWave, Imagine Canada, LinkedIn Sales Navigator), social media, alert services, available financial records, real estate ownership, and other markers of high-net-worth donors.
  • Complete special ad-hoc research projects to support donor development and fundraising strategies and to brief leadership in advance of meetings or important events.
  • Proactively keep abreast of the trends in philanthropy and charitable giving in Canada using targeted alerts and communicate this information to the relevant Philanthropy market-facing teams.
  • Help to innovate and identify new research techniques, strategies, and sources, and to devise database improvements to enhance the research process.
  • Track all constituent relationship activity, profiles, research information and corporate account management in our CRM database.
  • Maintain guidelines and policies for accurate and ethical management of donor and prospect information.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years’ related advancement research experience within a not for profit or charity
  • Experience with major gifs fund raising and capital campaign experience is an asset.
  • Ability to investigate, analyze, and synthesize large quantities of data into useable reports
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian business and economic landscape.
  • In-depth understanding of private and public foundations in Canada and demonstrated expertise in identifying and qualifying high-capacity foundation prospects.
  • Knowledge and expertise regarding Donor Advised Funds is an asset.
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter and naturally curious to proactively surface leads, opportunities, ideas, forge connections, identify trends and recommend actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment to develop cooperative working relationships.
  • Superb critical, analytical and strategic thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities while producing a high quality of work in a high-volume, and results oriented environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to successfully interact with external stakeholders and internal staff.
  • High commitment to fundraising ethics and donor privacy; acts with professionalism.
  • Experience working with a salesforce database like CRM or Raiser’s Edge; proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of and competency with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) Basic and Advanced Skill Set.
  • University or college degree in business, research or a related discipline.
  • Multi-language research capability is an asset.
