Are you interested in making a contribution to the safety and health of Ontario's highway infrastructures? If so, then bring your expertise in transportation structures to our Design and Engineering Branch, Structural Section.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

  • provide engineering expertise to safeguard the well-being of economic trade corridors throughout the Greater Toronto Area
  • plan, manage and deliver bridge projects to build stronger links to communities
  • carry out in-house designs for new bridges and rehabilitation of existing
  • provide technical supervision to professional structural engineers, technicians and drafters
  • bring leadership and technical knowledge to generate innovative solutions in ensuring the wise investment of tax dollars

Note: This position requires travel throughout Ontario

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

  • You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.


Technical Expertise:

  • You have extensive knowledge and experience in structural engineering and practices pertaining to the design, evaluation, inspection and maintenance of bridges, culverts and other transportation structures.
  • You have experience in preliminary and final designs for routine or complex new bridges and rehabilitation of existing structures, including coordinating the preparation of all related contract documents and drawings.
  • You have knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC).
  • You have demonstrated knowledge of hydrology studies, road design, soils, foundations and construction practices.


Project Management:

  • You have project management skills to manage several concurrent projects of large size and complexity; estimating resources and scheduling to ensure objectives and deadlines are met.
  • You have procurement and contract management knowledge to develop and manage integrated project plans, plan and determine resources, and to provide advice and expertise on project planning and management.


Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You have communication and interpersonal skills to participate in internal and external committees, liaise and negotiate with regional and operational staff and officials, consultants, contractors, authorities, municipalities and the general public.
  • You have written communication skills necessary to develop presentations, prepares briefing notes and Minister's letters as requested to provide information and guidance.


Leadership Skills:

  • You have the leadership skills and judgement required to lead projects of large size and complexity, lead assigned project teams, provide financial analysis, oversee consultant work, and provide guidance during all phases of the project.
