POSITION SUMMARY

Employees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Assembly) provide professional non-partisan services to support the democratic institution of Parliament and its members through procedural advice, administrative support, and information services. The Assembly is an autonomous employer, separate from the administrative framework of B.C. government ministries and agencies.

The Sergeant-at-Arms department is seeking six experienced, motivated, and resourceful individuals for the regular full-time and part-time position of Special Constable.

Reporting to the Special Constables Sergeant, the Special Constable is responsible for carrying out approved plans and security measures to ensure the protection of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), VIPs, employees, the public, and the protection of property and preservation of peace and order within the Legislative Precinct. This position patrols the Legislative Precinct and adjoining properties to prevent crimes and damage or loss to persons and property, conducts preliminary investigations, and prepares evidence for court proceedings.

The Constable must recognize, facilitate, and control the access of the many people who work in or visit the Legislature. The Constable must be sensitive to the diversity, needs, and beliefs of MLAs, their staff, other employees, the media, visitors, and tourists.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have at least five years of policing experience within a commonwealth jurisdiction within the last three years and must complete and provide a satisfactory criminal record check, which must be renewed every five years. Applicants must also meet and maintain the special constable basic occupational requirements and the Training Standards necessary for qualification with the following: Handgun, Conducted Energy Weapon, Baton, Oleoresin Capsicum, and Emergency First aid/level “C” CPR. HAZMAT or CBRNe training is an asset.
