Position Overview
A full-time vacancy exists for an experienced motivated individual to join our team as a Welder – Metal Fabricator. This is metal fabrication and welding work at the journeyman level, involving fitting, forging, brazing, heating, cutting, and laying out tasks whilst maintaining, repairing and overhauling a varied fleet consisting of approximately 225 Public Works, Fire/Rescue and other specialized vehicles, as well as equipment, structures and buildings both in the shop and field. There is advanced work in forging, tempering, cutting, straightening, bending, shaping and drawing out machine parts and tools along with skilled welding, heating, cutting and tapping tasks utilizing steel, cast iron and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
The successful candidate will be able to perform a variety of skilled welding and metal fabrication tasks with minimal supervision, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, work from blueprints, drawings, sketches and diagrams, and direct the work of helpers as required; have a thorough understanding of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used and how to properly care for them, and the hazards and proper safety precautions related to the work. The ability to weld aluminum, cast iron and steel, including layout and patterns and carry out small scale machine work would be considered an asset.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will at a minimum have completed Grade 10, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade and sound related journeyman experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Preference will be given to candidates who hold an Interprovincial Red Seal or Certificate of Qualification (TQ) for the Province of British Columbia in Welding with experience of Metal Fabrication. A valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement is preferred with the successful candidate required to obtain this endorsement within 6 months of employment if not currently held.
The District of North Vancouver supports continued education and development in areas of interest for all of its employees. The Fleet Department provides great opportunities for training including dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment.
Salary: The hourly rate for this unionized position is $40.46 per hour (2021 Rates) plus $0.75 per hour shift differential and an extended benefits package including pension. Hours of work are Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
