Role

The Water Quality Modeller is a technical professional position that contributes experience and a thorough understanding of state-of-the-art environmental modelling. Reporting to the Team Lead Environmental and Climate Change Modelling, the position will conduct analyses and computer simulations to address surface water quality issues. This includes supporting water quality studies at regional and strategic levels as well as the specific needs of both internal and external clients as related to water quality modelling.

This is an expert function and to be effective, knowledge of and significant experience in limnology, hydrology, hydrodynamics, statistics, and general ecology across media (water, air, land) as well as good understanding of relational databases and computer programming are required. The Water Quality Modeller will participate in research initiatives and cross ministry technical teams.

The Water Quality Modeller will use different water quality models (e.g. EFDC, SWAT, MIKE Eco Lab etc.) and be responsible to develop and maintain the water quality modelling tools to support the delivery of the Cumulative Effects Management System and other key provincial initiatives and strategies. In particularly, update and maintain the existing Bow River Water Quality Model (BRWQM) that was developed by the department jointly with the City of Calgary.

To support implementation of South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP), the Water Quality Modeller will also work with a task team under the Bow River Phosphorus Management Plan (BRPMP) to complete an Assimilative Capacity Study (Bow River Maximum Allowable Load -BRMAL) using BRWQM.

The Water Quality Modeller will also support municipal and industrial approvals (new or renewal applications) under EPEA.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Environmental Engineering or relevant science (ecological/environmental) or related fields. Post-graduate degree with a five years of related experience
  • Knowledge of and experience in limnology, hydrology, hydrodynamics, statistics, and general ecology across media (water, air, land) is required
  • Experience with database functions and model programming are required
  • Eligible to be member in relevant professional organization (e.g., APEGA for engineering positions) is required
  • Valid Alberta driver’s license is required

Salary

$3,007.16 to $4,163.64 bi-weekly ($78,486 to $108,671 annually)
