Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Resource Coordinator, the Home Care Attendant acts as a member of the healthcare team and provides basic supportive care in an independent manner. The Home Carer demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals and objectives of WRHA and HomeCare.
Experience
- Recent and related patient care experience is preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- minimum grade 10 education, Manitoba standards required.
- Health care assistants required successful completion of a recognized health care assistant course.
Should no qualified individuals apply, anyone without an HCA certification or experience will be considered subject to successful completion of the WRHA Home Care Comprehensive Training Program. Successful applicants who successfully complete this paid training program would receive a certification at $19.123 per hour.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- A valid driver's license and a valid automobile are required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge of:
- Information and/or training will be provided within the probation period for the following:
- Personal Health Information (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Materials information system, and Principles of routine practice (Uniform Precautions).
- Regional programs and policy and procedures.

- General skills and ability to perform all tasks, duties and responsibilities relevant to the position.
- Ability to organise and prioritize assigned work.

- The preference is given to those applicants competent in an Aboriginal language and/or knowledge of Aboriginal customs, traditions or values.
- Can respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
- Can perform as a team member and seek assistance as necessary.
Physical Requirements
- The position involves extensive physical activity such as lifting, bending.
- Health: Must be in good physical and mental health.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, noise, allergens (i.e. residual smoke, pet dander or pet feces), physical and emotional stress.
- May encounter aggressive or agitated customers, visitors, or employees.
- Will include travel between clients with unpredictable driving conditions or potential inclement weather.
- May encounter home environments that could have congested spaces, uneven surfaces (both inside and outside the house environment).
- Ability to travel between assignments in a community area to several private homes of clients within Winnipeg and surrounding areas, and adapt to changes in scheduling on short notice. This position is also subject to TB Immunization or Tuberculin testing as per WRHA policy.
This position requires a current satisfactory criminal records check (including the Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adolescent and Family History Registry check), which is considered current if it was obtained no more than six months prior to the start of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred.
