Full Description

Are you someone with a knack for youth work, a heart for helping children, and the drive to make a meaningful difference in their lives?

Whytecliff Agile Learning Centers (walc.ca) in Langley BC is seeking a full time, experienced Youth Development Worker to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a fun, dynamic, and innovative community and to make a real difference in kids’ lives!

A little about us:
Whytecliff is a BC Ministry of Education accredited independent school for grades 8-12. Our Langley campus is small, with a tight-knit team of staff serving up to 43-45 students (with an overall student to staff ratio of 5 or 6 to 1). We serve a variety of truly great kids who arrive with an array of learning needs and personal challenges (such as anxiety, depression, dyslexia, and ADHD). Here, in a calm, comfortable, and collaborative setting, Whytecliff incorporates a customized, educational approach for each child, tailored to their unique strengths, needs, passions, and interests, with a special emphasis on promoting positive mental health and wellness.

Whytecliff is unique. It stands apart as being one of the few programs in North America that seamlessly integrates education and youth work (to provide the best in learning AND therapeutic experiences). We use a strengths-based, positive therapeutic community approach that is transformative for many of the youth attending our programs. We have an active gym program, music program, hockey program, and evolve new exciting opportunities every year. (This year, we're incorporating a hiking program with Outward Bound and a special emphasis on project-based learning!)

A little about who we’re looking for:
The ideal candidates will have a background in youth work and group work as well as a Bachelor’s degree in youth work, social work, psychology, education, or the humanities. We look for staff that are warm, welcoming, calm, caring, sincere, thoughtful, and good active listeners. ...Someone who has an engaging presence and a positive, uplifting energy with children, someone who is a natural organizer and has the flexibility, focus and creativity to think both inside the box AND outside it, someone who is naturally self-reflective, values learning and is deeply curious about the world, someone who seeks to continually grow as a person and who has an authentic interest in cultivating positive mental health and wellness, and someone who loves working with children and being a positive influence in their life.

The role of the Youth Development Worker at Whytecliff is dynamic, hands-on, and team-oriented, and includes: developing, organizing and leading field trips, off-site excursions and wellness-themed activities; working with educators to help implement and supervise kids with their educational and extra-curricular projects; overseeing and supporting groups of students throughout the day; helping with transportation and daily program operations; mentoring/guidance/counseling; and also some tutoring and helping students with their various learning and personal growth objectives. ...The job also entails a high degree of sensitivity around children's various abilities, challenges, preferences, and needs, as well as great written and verbal communication skills (especially in emails and phone calls to parents and in case notes and therapeutic documentation). Youth Workers at Whytecliff also need to be able to think conceptually and contextually in order to successfully infuse the therapeutic philosophy and guiding principles of the program into their daily work with kids. This means learning to think from and align your professional practice with a strengths-based, positive developmental framework, with the emphasis on fostering children's mental health and wellness, sparking curiosity and authentic engagement with learning, and cultivating personal flourishing and connection to the community.
