About Us
The Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal is an independent appeals tribunal which hears and decides appeals from final decisions of the Workers' Compensation Board. The Tribunal is governed by the Workers' Compensation Act of Nova Scotia and is the final level of appeal within the workers' compensation system.
About Our Opportunity
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Office Services, the incumbent provides secretarial and administrative support services to the Tribunal and is responsible for the administration of a high volume of appeals during various stages of the appeal process. You are required to function with a high degree of independence, utilizing considerable initiative and judgment regarding all aspects of the Tribunal’s operations. It is necessary you deal with confidential information in a discreet and tactful manner, applying Tribunal policies and procedures as necessary.
Primary Accountabilities
Your responsibilities include:
- transcribing and creating a variety of documents including appeal decisions and correspondence;
- maintaining an established filing system;
- opening and closing appeal files;
- updating appeal information using the WCB’s database system, various spreadsheets and analyzing data, as required, to ensure the accuracy of appeal information;
- contacting appeal participants, as required;
- responding to and directing incoming calls, e-mails and inquiries;
- providing front desk and telephone reception relief.
Qualifications and Experience
You will have four (4) years of related secretarial/administrative assistant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
For this position, your competency and experience in a computerized environment with proficient and accurate keyboarding with a minimum typing speed of 60 wpm, dictation transcription experience and a working knowledge of case management systems are required. You are skilled at managing electronic and hard copy filing systems. A high degree of initiative, excellent organization and communication skills (both written and verbal) are essential. You are self-motivated, detail oriented and effective at working independently under minimal supervision to prioritize work demands and meet deadlines while exercising appropriate judgment.
Time management skills are essential to this role, as well as maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You must demonstrate flexibility in your work routine, be well-organized, have the ability to multi-task and establish priorities to manage a demanding workload. You must maintain effective working relationships and handle matters with discretion, confidentiality, tact and diplomacy. Your ability to effectively interact with the public in a sometimes challenging environment while maintaining confidentiality is important to your success in this role.
Assets include:
- Previous working experience in a legal environment.
- Bilingualism with written and oral skills in English and French.

Equivalency
An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:
- A two-year certificate/diploma plus two years of related experience
- A one-year certificate/diploma plus three years of related experience

Pay Grade: CL 18
Salary Range: $1,675.62 - $1,874.80 Bi-Weekly
