WORK STATUS: Full time, permanent
HOURS OF WORK: Halifax Regional Police operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week – therefore shift work (including days, nights, weekends, and holidays) is a requirement of this position. A typical shift is 12-hours. Depending on operational requirements, flexibility around scheduling is required.
SALARY: $67,133.28 - $111,888.79 per year as per the Agreement between the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Halifax Regional Police Association. Salary will commensurate with experience.
WORK LOCATION: 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 2H1.
CLOSING DATE: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 pm on June 30, 2024. Please note: Halifax Regional Police recruits annually. Your application may not be processed until after the closing date.

Key Information to Consider:
- Starting compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidates’ qualifications and experience within the HRPA Collective Agreement structure. The annual constable base salary ranges from $67,133.28 - $111,888.79 (as of October 1, 2023). Salary will commensurate with experience.
- All new hires will commence in our patrol division
- We accept applications from currently serving police officers or Canadian Military Police (regular service) with Qualifications Level 5
- According to Halifax Regional Police policy and Nova Scotia Department of Justice guidelines, an experienced police officer refers to :
- Current serving police officers in Canada, or
- Canadian Military Police (regular service) with Qualifications Level 5, or
- Applicants who successfully completed an approved Police Recruit Training Program from a Nova Scotia recognized training program within the last 24 months or less, and/or
- Applicants successfully completed an approved Police Recruit Training Program from a Nova Scotia recognized training program and has been gainfully employees with a recognized Canadian police agency within the last 24 months or less.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Grade 12 education
- Must be a graduate of a recognized police training program
- No criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted and no adult criminal charges pending
- Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license or equivalent from another Canadian province

- Driver's license
- Certificate from a recognized police training program
- Motor Vehicle Driver’s Abstract (will be required during selection process)
- Valid certification in standard first aid and CPR Level C (will be required during selection process)
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Screening
All applications will be reviewed. You’ll advance to the second stage of the process if your application demonstrates that you meet the application criteria.
2. Cognitive ability test
You’ll be given an appointment for a timed cognitive ability test. The test is pass or fail, and not all candidates who meet the minimum standard will proceed to the next stage.

You must complete the PARE within four minutes—the minimum standard for experienced police officers. Not all candidates who meet minimum standard will proceed to the next stage.

You’ll be given a pre-employment security & background booklet to complete and return to Human Resources. Human Resources will review your booklet and decide if you are suitable to move to the pre-employment security & background screening.

You’ll participate in a competency-based panel interview. The interview is designed to allow you to draw on examples from your work or life experience to demonstrate that you possess the necessary competencies to be a Halifax Regional Police Officer.
The results of the Background & Security screening are confidential and only a pass or fail result is released to Human Resources. You’ll be thoroughly investigated to determine your suitability to be a police officer. Your references and previous employers may be contacted, and family and friends may be contacted and/or visited during this stage.

If you are successful through the previous six stages, you must undergo a medical exam to determine if you meet the medical standards set by Halifax Regional Police and the Province of Nova Scotia. The medical exam will include a vision and a hearing test.
