Who We Are

The Department of Cyber Security and Digital Solutions guides digital transformation within the Government of Nova Scotia. At CSDS, we support government departments and partners in their digital transformation journeys. We don't just implement digital solutions; we navigate the complexities of digital transformation, modernizing outdated systems and ways of working. Our role is to ensure that digital services are user-centered, efficient, and make a real difference to Nova Scotians.

Our team is diverse and passionate, championing innovation and embracing the richness of multiple perspectives. We're not just an IT department; we're a community dedicated to enabling digital transformation and bolstering cybersecurity across the province.

Join us at CSDS as we shape the future of digital services in Nova Scotia, supporting our partners in their journey towards a digital future.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Web, the Web UI Designer is part of a multidisciplinary team that designs, builds and maintains government’s websites. We help Nova Scotians find, understand, and take action for the programs and services they need.

The Web UI Designer works closely, with developers and content strategists to produce digital products and design systems. As a Web UI Designer, you will develop expressions of the government brand into user interfaces that are accessible, easy to use, and engaging.

You will participate in the strategy and UX work that lays the foundations of our web design process as it moves from the early strategy phase into the visual UI design. Working with developers, you will ensure the designs align with the needs, requirements, and design intent.

About You

As a part of a multidisciplinary team, in this role you will:

  • Assist in planning the UI design process for client engagements.
  • Lead the visual UI design process.
  • Assist and collaborating with others in the UI design process.
  • Translate client business requirements, UI/UX work (wireframes, user flows, etc.), and technical and content requirements into high-fidelity designs and prototypes.
  • Assist with design QA work during development.
  • Help our strategy and design teams continue to improve our approach and processes over time.
  • Contribute to design systems for complex sites and products.
  • Create and translating UI designs into complete design systems and their corresponding documentation, guidelines, and tools.
  • Assist and collaborating in creating design systems and their corresponding documentation, guidelines, and tools.
  • Participate in testing, measurement, and evaluation of design solutions.
  • Occasionally collaborate with vendors including resolving project blockers or other barriers.

In addition, as the Web Specialists, you may be called upon to provide advice or support related to the technical implementation and integration of social media as a part of a web project or strategy.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you will have a bachelor’s degree plus three (3) years related experience; or graduation from a recognized Information Technology Program plus three (3) years and six (6) months; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

In addition, you have the following skills and experiences:

  • A portfolio of visual web UI design work
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web standards and how page structure affects user experience and search engine optimization
  • Experience leading successful UI design processes
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with developers and clients through an iterative process to arrive at great designs that meet client and end-user needs
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working closely with developers and in agile teams
  • At least a basic working knowledge of front-end development (e.g., HTML and CSS)
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated application of web accessibility principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of how design affects website performance (for example, the time to load a page)

Nice to haves:

  • An interest in learning about how Drupal and large-scale CMS projects work
  • Illustration skills
  • Prototyping skills
  • Experience working on large-scale CMS projects
  • Experience participating in the planning and creation of design systems
