Job Summary:

The incumbent performs a wide range of planning and sustainability services support activities in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Vacancy # 1: The incumbent will support the City’s climate mitigation efforts by creating an internal corporate energy dashboard and developing a guidelines document for broader application. The incumbent should have skills and experience in dashboard development and has the option to work remotely.
  • Vacancy # 2: The incumbent will support the City’s land use planning efforts by assisting with the City’s Zoning Bylaw rewrite and land use master planning projects. The incumbent should have skills and experience in data analysis, public engagement and communications, research, and report writing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Research and evaluate innovative planning initiatives, economic development and sustainability initiatives from other jurisdictions and consider their applicability in Whitehorse.
2. Draft, design, implement and analyze survey data, and develops educational and other communication materials.
3. Lead simple public engagement processes.
4. Prepare draft reports, displays, handouts and other public documents for review by supervisor.
5. Answer enquiries on planning and sustainability matters.
6. Provide input into relevant bylaws, policies and planning studies.
7. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
8. Other related duties.

Job Requirements:

Working Conditions:

Majority of the work is performed under normal office conditions. Some evening and weekend work.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Currently enrolled or completed post-secondary program (minimum 2 year program) in Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies or other Social Science.
  • Experience in land use planning, environment, economic development and/or sustainability or related field is an asset.
  • Knowledge of municipal services and bylaws with respect to planning, economic development and sustainability.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
  • Effective oral and written communications.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, etc.
