The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manger, Surveying, this position performs a variety of technical duties related to the collection and dissemination of Land Surveying and Engineering information as required by the City.
Accountabilities
- Operate a variety of surveying equipment including theodolite, level, total station, data collector, G.P.S. Receiver, scientific calculator, among others;
- Perform property survey work for land acquisition, real property reports, rights-of-way, street widening, and sewer easements, etc.
- Search survey records to obtain information about property boundaries;
- Prepare grade lay-out and elevations for roads, water and sewer mains, sidewalks and ancillary services;
- Effectively uploads and downloads survey data to the instrument and prepares the information for verification;
- Perform coordinate geometry using MicroSurvey CAD software or equivalent;
- Determine various ground level elevations by running profiles and cross sectioning, for the purpose of road construction;
- Prepare curve data on the direction and width of City street construction;
- Prepare survey level lines for the maintenance of the City boundaries in the Water Shed area;
- Perform survey work relating to horizontal monumentation and establishment of Bench Marks;
- Obtain survey field information for Engineering cost estimates and as built data for future record purposes;
- Obtain water soundings for underwater ground profiles;
- Reduce survey field notes and prepares any necessary written reports;
- Perform regular checks on supplies and survey equipment, including minor maintenance/repairs.

Qualifications
High School Diploma. Three (3+) Year Geomatics/Surveying Technology program from a recognized educational institution acceptable to the City. Must be eligible to become a member of the Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists NL (AETTNL).
Specific Skills/Certifications –
- Works well within a team and addresses people in a tactful, diplomatic manner.
- A basic working knowledge of MicroSurvey CAD (or equivalent) is required. Proficient in the use of various surveying equipment and related software.
Relevant Experience
- Two (2+) years previous experience as a survey crew chief in performing legal surveys, topographic surveys, accurate horizontal and vertical control, and calculating coordinates from azimuths and bearings.
- Preference will be given to candidates with additional experience in laying out curves and grades, taking cross-sections, collecting sewer main inverts and running profiles.
Other - Must possess a valid "Class 5" Driver's License.
Working Conditions
- Combination of office and fieldwork.
- Performs surveying tasks on all types of terrain under all types of weather conditions with exposure to traffic and distracting noise levels.
Physical Requirements
- Standing for extended periods, lifting objects on a regular basis, and repetitive tasks, etc.
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing the above-noted duties.
Hours of Work
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily Monday to Friday (33.75 hours per week)
