The City of Burnaby’s Engineering Department currently has an exciting seasonal opportunity for an enthusiastic individual seeking practical experience to work in an auxiliary capacity as a Survey Assistant 1. Typical duties in this position can include clearing foliage and other obstacles from transit lines; taking linear measurements with steel tape or chain; cutting, driving and marking posts and stakes; locating and uncovering survey pins. The Survey Assistant 1 will assist with establishing lines and grades using various tools and preparing field notes, sketches and survey computations. Other responsibilities include compiling data, maintaining hand tools and equipment, operating a van, and preparing plans and maps using CAD software under the direction of a supervisor. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of municipal surveying, engineering principles and mathematics related to the position. This position also requires the ability to make elementary arithmetic calculations, prepare simple sketches and notes, perform manual work in all weather, prepare plans and maps under direction, and to assist a supervisor in making calculations. A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
