In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

The Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre is a personal, professional, and career development centre that serves 4,000+ undergraduate and 1,000+ graduate business students at UBC Sauder School of Business.

The Career Strategist is part of the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) team and supports UBC Sauder students enrolled in the Commerce Undergraduate Program to become career-ready graduates – able to connect their skills, talents, interests and education to the changing world of work. The Career Strategist is responsible for supporting student learning and promoting student engagement in personal, professional, and career building experiences within and beyond the university. The Career Strategist designs, develops, delivers, and evaluates in-person and online career learning across the undergraduate student population within UBC Sauder School of Business. The Career Strategist leverages and incorporates direct industry experience and knowledge to student program development and advising. The services will be provided both in person and in virtual format.

The Career Strategist delivers a high-quality level of service to a high-expectation population with discrete and multi-faceted needs. The Career Strategist is responsible for the entire cycle of students’ career journey at UBC Sauder, from intake to internship landings - in collaboration with the Centre’s Business Development team - to new grad support.

The Career Strategist achieves results in three key areas of responsibility:
1. Personal and professional development: Develops and delivers comprehensive, world-class customized career services and education and tailors it to the needs of the undergraduate student population.
2. Access to business community: Expands students’ opportunities to engage with employers, alumni and community.
3. Service Excellence: In collaboration with colleagues across the BCC, continuously improves the quality of career content and resources.

Across all three areas of responsibility, the incumbent will align with career development principles and employ advising practices to deliver, assess and evaluate programs and services to students.

Organizational Status
The Career Strategist, Undergraduate Programs reports to the Associate Director, BCom Careers regularly plans and collaborates with colleagues from across the BCC as well as the Undergraduate Office. The Career Strategist may supervise external consultants, support employees and students. The Career Strategist takes on leadership roles in cross-functional team projects within the BCC, and Undergraduate Office.

Work Performed
1. Personal and professional development: Develops and delivers comprehensive, world-class customized career services and education and tailors it to the needs of the undergraduate student population.
  • Develops innovative and scalable career tools, resources, and activities as well as networking events to support students in their unique career journeys.
  • Supports students in their awareness and development of personal and professional competencies, including self-awareness, communication, decision making and learning, all related to their career goals.
  • Leverages industry knowledge and expertise, innovative theory, evidence-based practices within the fields of career development and student affairs to design, deliver and evaluate career programming and resources.
  • Provides in-person and online career support and advises on career exploration, researching the labour market, facilitating experiential learning (e.g., internships, consulting projects, part-time work) and reflection, gaining work/volunteer/leadership experience, resumes, developing resumes, job and mock interviews, networking and connecting to the workplace community, etc.
  • Identifies and refers students who need health and wellbeing resources to the appropriate support or intervention (i.e. Emergency Services, Counseling Services, Early Alert).
  • Promotes student participation and engagement in experiential learning opportunities, creates opportunities for reflection and connects these insights to their current and future career goals.
  • Supports student learning and promotes student engagement in career development activities within UBC Sauder, UBC and beyond.

2. Access to business community: Expands students’ opportunities to engage with the business community including local, national and global employers, alumni and industry stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with the Business Career Centre, Business Development (BD) team and UBC Alumni Engagement partners, builds and maintains relationships with the business community to facilitate student learning and development, focused on careers.
  • Develops resources and tools which enable students to access, connect and network with the business community.
  • Creates strategic opportunities for students to engage with and learn from the business community. For example, industry lead or facilitated career development programming.
  • Facilitates student connections and introductions to the business community for informational interviews and coffee chats.
  • Advises students of relevant opportunities to engage with the business community through networking events and other activities that support their career goals.
  • Contributes to the success and sustainability of student-led initiatives by connecting them to the business community (e.g., clubs and societies).

3. Service Excellence: In collaboration with colleagues across the BCC, continuously improves the quality of career content and resources.
  • Leads and contributes to programs and initiatives to develop and implement a variety of career and professional development initiatives. Collaborates with multiple stakeholders to set project goals, timelines, scope and processes, manages communication among project participants, identifies obstacles, plans and chairs meetings, tracks timelines, evaluates outcomes, etc.
  • Fosters student leadership and career learning through advising, training, and professional development support for student clubs, organizations, volunteers, and teams.
  • Fosters an inclusive and respectful learning environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive professionally, academically, and personally. This includes work with school employees and students to support distinct populations within the school and to prepare students for success after graduation.
  • Participates in the assessment and evaluation of career learning for students. Collects and records statistical information and feedback, analyzes, documents and reports results, integrates suggestions and improvements into programs and services.
  • Continuously develops connections with other career service centres and provides insights into what leading business schools in North America and globally offer regarding similar services. Responsible for the continued improvement of delivery of service by the incumbent and external resources.
  • Contributes to strategic planning processes and the setting of goals and priorities for the portfolio.
  • Influences multiple stakeholders to create and set direction, persuade action, and achieve consensus toward collective aspirations and goals as related to career building experiences.
  • Assists in managing the marketing and promotion of programs and events to students, alumni, faculty, academic departments, and the workplace community.
  • Trains professional employees of the school and volunteers.
  • Develops, manages, and maintains a budget for appropriate student resources, support, and activities.
  • Undertakes other related duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Works with considerable autonomy and exercises considerable judgment in carrying out assignments and respectfully dealing with a diverse group of important stakeholders. Accountable for the effective execution of all matters related to undergraduate students’ career services and the effectiveness of the services provided. Makes significant independent decisions and recommendations in areas of planning, organizing and scheduling of work. Establishes own operational procedures for undergraduate Career Services, monitors progress, and recommends program development changes in relation to curriculum needs and stakeholder feedback. Exercises significant level of judgment in dealings with the business community, faculty members and alumni.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Associate Director, BCom Careers. Works autonomously under broad guidelines and under a high level of accountability.

Supervision Given
Trains and supervises support employees, student assistants, interns, consultants and/or volunteers. Trains new professional employees in the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Private sector experience. 1-2 key areas of industry knowledge and expertise; awareness of general labour market trends.
  • Experience working with management to executive level business people in one or more of the areas of career coaching, recruitment, training and learning development, career services delivery, outplacement, executive search, talent management and transition/recruitment.
  • Knowledgeable about career trends in the changing world of work.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, public speaking, and organization skills.
  • Computer skills required. Must have experience with MS Office applications, including advanced Word and PowerPoint skills and intermediate Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs or events.
  • Ability to work both independently and within multiple team environments.
  • Must accommodate flexible hours – for example: may attend events, deliver workshops or provide training some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct respectful consultation and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Graduate degree is an asset.
  • Knowledge of self-assessment tools and programs (e.g., CliftonStrengths, Career Leader, Emotional Capital Report) is an asset.
  • Hands-on knowledge of online content development, delivery and management (blog and/or website management).
  • Working knowledge of databases and contact management systems is an asset.
  • Facilitation or teaching experience.
  • Experience in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating career-related content in workshops or group settings is an asset.
  • Experience using web-based platforms and instructional technology to teach and engage students in career development.
