About Us



The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative and accountable local government to Albertans. Our main responsibilities are:

  • funding supports for municipalities
  • a system that strives to ensure appropriate safety standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings and equipment
  • protections for new home buyers and required licensing for home builders
  • province-wide support for access to public library services for Albertans
  • management of about 2.6 million acres of public land in the province's three Special Areas
  • independent review and decisions on local matters by the Land and Property Rights Tribunal


The Policy Advisor position is in the Municipal Services Division. The Municipal Services Division supports municipalities in meeting their mandate to provide accountable and effective local government to Albertans. The division provides support services and advice to municipalities, manages the ministry’s primary legislation governing municipalities – including the Municipal Government Act, Local Authorities Election Act, and Special Areas Act and their associated regulations, leads policy initiatives relating to municipal provincial relations, and coordinates the ministry’s stakeholder relations.

Reporting to the Policy Manager, the Policy Advisor is responsible for providing proactive, comprehensive, and sound policy advice to support the Minister and executive leadership.

This role will provide strategic advice for the development and implementation of changes necessary to address key municipal governance, elections, and planning issues facing Alberta municipalities. This includes providing strategic policy development and advice on ministry priorities and legislation including the Municipal Government Act and the Local Authorities Election Act. The team also captures and analyzes information related to municipal challenges and trends.

The main responsibilities of the Policy Advisor are:

  • Preparing and editing correspondence, briefing notes, and presentations for senior management and the Minister.
  • Creating policy decision packages for Cabinet
  • Tracking and analyzing key municipal issues and emerging trends
  • Gathering input from other government ministries and stakeholders

Qualifications

A University degree in a social sciences field, plus 4 years of related experience in policy research and analysis.

Assets:

  • Strong ability to conduct research and analyze information
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Knowledge and/or experience working with key municipal issues
  • Knowledge and/or experience with municipal government related legislation, regulations, policies and programs


Equivalencies:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
1 year of related education is equivalent to 1 year of experience

Salary

$2,716.64 to $3,550.90 bi-weekly ($70,904 - $92,678/year)
