At the Department of Public Works we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations and Bridge Crew are essential to ensuring the safety of various bridges in the province.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the District Bridge Engineer, the Bridge Inspector is part of a team responsible for managing the bridges in the District. The Bridge Inspector is responsible for the regular inspection of the bridges and the completion of inspection reports, which includes detailed information on deficiencies and recommended repair options.

Primary Accountabilities

The Bridge Inspector assists with the preparation of tenders, environmental applications, and inspects the work of Contractors and Department personnel undertaking bridge repairs. The Bridge Inspector also maintains the Department's bridge inventory and inspection databases. The Bridge Inspector provides guidance and instruction to the Assistant Bridge Inspector as well as training to employees related to bridge inspection and repairs. May also be responsible for surveying bridge sites and drafting plans and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

High School completion plus completion of a related trade or technical training in the area of specialty (Civil Engineering Technology or Survey Technology) and 6 years of related experience after course completion; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
Must be able to understand and accurately describe bridge components, document their condition, recognize types of deterioration/damage, and determine the causes in order to recommend repair options. Must be able to assess the general safety of a bridge structure and advise of potential safety problems. Must have a working knowledge of the various aspects of bridge and highway construction design standards, safety requirements, and contract specifications.
Must have strong computer skills, including creating spreadsheets, working with databases (such as BMS and BIS or equivalent) and creating AutoCAD drawings.
Proficiency in mathematics, drafting, and reading construction plans is essential.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, at various heights, and have the ability to climb structures. Bridge Inspectors are often required to work from staging, ladders, boom lifts, and boats.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required. Must be a motivated self-starter who can work independently and with minimal supervision.

An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be acceptable in place of education requirements. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Working Conditions

About 70% of the work is outdoors with considerable travel in both summer and winter, often to isolated areas. When working outdoors, the Inspector may be on a construction site working close to traffic and working at various heights. The Bridge Inspector may be exposed to hazardous materials such as creosote, bird droppings, and lead paint.

Additional Information

Successful completion of the "FHWA-NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges" 2-week training course is required to maintain this position. This training will be provided by the department and will be required to be completed within 1 year of employment.
The Bridge Inspector may occasionally be required to supervise bridge maintenance staff and coordinate the work.

Pay Grade: TE 24

Salary Range: $2,358.22 - $2,777.49 Bi-Weekly
