Title

Environmental Services Operator

Reports to

Utility Manager

Nature of Position
Full Time Permanent Position. Position falls under the Town of Pictou/Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 281 Collective Agreement.

Duties

The Operator shall:

· Monitor SCADA for water treatment plant, waste water treatment plant, wells, reservoir, PRV and lift stations.

· Collect water/wastewater treatment plant and distribution system samples, perform water quality tests;

· Respond to mechanical, electrical, and computer related issues in a timely manner;

· Perform operational and maintenance inspections on pumps, chemical feeds, tanks, analyzers and all system components at both plants;

· Perform operational and maintenance at the wellhouses and lift stations

· Perform preventive maintenance and follow programs;

· Load and unload chemicals;

· Maintain plant and system records including operating logs, and monthly, quarterly and annual reports;

· Property maintenance as required;

· Assist with developing Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Work Practices;

· Will be required to share on call duties on weekly rotations with the other operators;

· Other Duties as required;

Requirements

· High School Diploma or GED equivalent

· Diploma from a Technical School preferred

· Advanced First Aid***

· Fall Arrest***

· Confined Space***

· Certified with WHMIS***

· NSE Certified Level 2 Water Treatment *,**

· NSE Certified Level 2 Waste Water Treatment *, **

· NSE Certified Level 2 Water Distribution*, **

· NSE Certified Level 2 Wastewater Collection*, **

· Equipment experience preferred, including grader, loader, and backhoe

· Basic computer skills

Salary Expectation

· As per the collective agreement. Operator pay will be activated upon obtaining requirements marked with a “*”.

Working Conditions

· May be exposed to dust, hazardous chemicals and high levels of noise

· Potential dangers involved with mechanical work and repair

· May be required to work in hazardous environments requiring protective equipment, i.e. without limitation trenches and confined areas

· Ability to attend and conduct presentations, i.e. without limitation conduct ‘tool box’ meetings

Nature of Position

The Operator shall:

  • physically perform the duties of any public works employee, without limitation, those of a machine operator, or those of a plant or utility operator, or any other position;
  • take initiative in identifying and addressing situations as they arise;
  • be required prioritize duties and projects;
  • be responsible for the management and charge out of inventory and labour;
  • be responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, legally compliant and productive work environment;
  • retain a high level of mechanical aptitude and be responsible for completing and/or coordinating the completion of maintenance schedules;
  • operate various types of machinery, train and mentor other trades, troubleshoot, assist in the maintenance and repairing of machinery and equipment, and perform other duties as assigned;
  • follow the chain of command; and
  • understand and follow the Town’s Occupational Health & Management Safety System.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Diploma from a Technical School preferred
  • Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement*
  • Advanced First Aid**
  • Trenching course**
