The Opportunity

The City of St. John's is seeking responsible adults who are available to work for two hours a day and are interested in making a difference in their community. Crossing guards play an important role in keeping children safe on their way to and from school by assisting with the crossing of children in a safe and controlled environment. Crossing guards are designated to primary and elementary schools during school arrival and dismissal times specific to each location.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure the safety of children crossing busy street intersections
  • Maintain a pleasant, courteous and helpful attitude toward children, their guardians and the general public at all times
  • Report dangerous driving, crossing practices or problems to the appropriate authorities
  • Escort children across the street using caution and displaying a crossing sign
  • Prevent children from crossing the street until it is safe to do so
  • Establish and maintain effective relations with the school children and the general public

Qualifications

Successful candidates must be able to learn and apply traffic regulations, particularly those pertaining to pedestrian crosswalks; communicate clearly and effectively, and work on a daily basis in all weather conditions.

Additional Qualifications
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check (or equivalent) – Dated within the last six months.

Working Conditions

Working outside in all weather conditions.

Hours of Work

This position works for (1) hour for the morning and (1) hour for each afternoon (2 hours per day), Monday - Friday (when school is in session).

Period of Employment
September 6, 2023 - June 20, 2024.
