The Opportunity

The Specialist, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) acts as an intermediary to diffuse conflict and increase effective communication between stakeholders, Indigenous communities, and industry across the lifecycle of energy development. Through analysis and engagement with parties, you will provide process options to assist in the resolution of concerns. These include mediation, facilitation, and conflict coaching approaches. You will also connect parties with the AER to ensure accurate, reliable information is understood, and to promote education and information sharing. ADR Specialists work across the organization and collaborate with Operations, Hearing Services, and the Law Branch to contribute to the mandate of the AER.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply interest-based principles in conflict resolution practice by assisting parties to mediate and/or facilitate resolution of concerns relating to energy development.
  • Prepare and debrief parties, including AER technical subject matter experts.
  • Ensure process integrity and adherence to professional code of ethics.
  • Using adult education principles and practices, educate AER staff and external stakeholders about conflict resolution processes, skills, attitude, and knowledge.
  • Model excellent empathic communication and provide internal coaching and skill development.
  • Ensure that stakeholders and indigenous communities have enough access to technical and process information at the AER to be able to participate fully in ADR.
  • Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of AER processes and legislation.
  • Engage externally and internally to provide support for inquiries, complaints, and group facilitation support.
  • Collect and file pertinent data in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years mediation experience along with an undergraduate degree in a related discipline such as Psychology, Human Services, Communication, or other Social Sciences.
  • Qualified Mediator (Q. Med) or Chartered Mediator (C. Med) Professional Designation, is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 100 hours of conflict resolution training from a reputable institution.
  • Familiar with oil, gas, and mining industry, as well as government and private landowner energy perspectives in Alberta is an asset.
  • Adaptable to change and evolving work priorities.

Additional Requirements and Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Pre-placement Medical required.
  • Possess a fully valid driver’s license along with a positive driving record. The word "fully" describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and "positive driving record" as defined in the AER driving policy.
  • Additional training may be required in First Aid, H2S Alive, and Driver Training.
  • Travel is required for this position including some overnights away from home (approximately 1-2 nights per month). Staff are expected to work a flexible workday when necessary.
