THE COMPANY

Cheers! Okanagan Tours Ltd. was founded in 2016 and quickly vaulted from 124th place to first place on TripAdvisor® for exemplary tour and transportation experiences. Fanatic discipline, empirical creativity, and productive paranoia fuel our desire to build an uncommon company culture that focuses on the care and success of our employee-partners, customers, vendors, and neighbors. Helping people thrive differentiates our business.

Years of volunteering our time in remote developing countries plagued by conflict and natural disasters assisting victims rebuild their lives was intensely fulfilling. Later, adopting brother and sister twin orphans from Haiti, training them up and watching them volunteer in orphanages in Zambia and Haiti as adults was powerfully inspiring. Helping people to feel cared for, valued, and respected permeates the Cheers! culture.

“ABOVE AND BEYOND”

Unexpectedly arranging the transportation of 150 stranded travelers between the Vancouver Airport and the Okanagan on Christmas Eve in 2022 – that invigorates us! As seen on Castanet. All of a sudden transporting a Vernon High School choir on the eve of their performances at Black History Month celebrations in Vancouver when their local transportation abruptly bailed on them at the absolute last minute in 2017 – that stimulates us! Spontaneously driving 14 hours to help 16 US golfers get to Seattle to catch their flights home because the Kelowna airport suddenly closed due to forest fire smoke in 2018 – that energizes us. Abruptly driving to Kamloops to rescue 5 re-routed air-travelers, take them all the way to Kaslo in the Kootenays and return to Kelowna in 14 hours in 2023 – that rouses us! Helping people differentiates our business.

Much more than just delivering once-in-a-lifetime wine tours, today we deliver 4 very different tiers of wine tours, from our self-guided DIY option to authentic guided tours like The Modest Tour, The Classic Tour, and The Premium Tour. Moreover, we deliver group transportation solutions for weddings, golfers, sports teams, corporate events, private events, and air travelers. In the winter we safely deliver skiers and snowboarders to over 50 Heli-Ski, Cat-Ski, Ski Resorts and airports throughout southern British Columbia!

Cheers! is a LEGITIMATE tour and transportation operator. We are EI, CRA, and Employment Standards Compliant, WorkSafeBC Insured, CGL Insured, ICBC Commercial Fleet Insured, BC Passenger Transportation Licenced (PT72224), National Safety Code and Transport Canada Certified (202445168). Read about our fleet and safety standards here.

Be wary of unscrupulous tour operators illegally suggesting you’re a contractor, not an employee!

With caring for people as a core value, we’re constantly evolving, introducing innovative experiences and services, creating fresh opportunities for employee-partners, scaling into new communities, generating economic development, growing our brand, all-the-while bringing our love, philanthropy, and community-mindedness into every Okanagan community we serve. Mamas for Mamas, Freedom’s Door, and Dreams Take Flight are just a few of our favorite charities. Helping our employee-partners, customers, vendors, and neighbors thrive differentiates our business.

COMPENSATION

In 2022, the recorded average compensation equaled $41 per hour for guiding and $28 per hour for shuttle driving. Our tour guide and shuttle driver compensation package begins with a simple $17 an-hour wage coupled with guaranteed gratuities, overnight shift differentials, as well as various commissions, spiffs, and performance bonuses.

Not reflected are uncalculated additional gifts and gratuities at our guests’ discretion.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TOUR GUIDES AT CHEERS OKANAGAN TOURS

You are witty, charming, sociable, and selfless. You are articulate, courteous and charismatic. You are a fun “people-person”. You like to have a lot of fun. Perhaps you’re tired of being RETIRED? You are a non-smoker. You are well-groomed and have fresh breath.

People say you’re fun and interesting. Some would also say, caring, reliable, genuine and principled. Your natural wit and humor are appreciated by others – not just yourself!!! :)

You appreciate being: celebrated, heard, provided feedback on performance, given opportunities to learn new skills, given autonomy, and informed on the direction and strategy of the company.

You have excellent driving habits and a near-perfect driving record. (Driving vehicles, not golf balls silly :)

If I’ve described you – you are in for the time of your life! As tour guides and shuttle drivers we have way too much fun and zero drama – except for sharing our wittiness and storytelling.

Daily physical requirements of this position include excessive smiling and laughing, lifting up to 40 lbs., repeated driving, standing, walking, talking, ascending or descending stairs and ramps along with intermittent kneeling, pushing, pulling, sweeping, and disposing of trash. Not unlike cleaning out the garage or a round of Texas Scramble.

For this position we’re hiring personally engaging, knowledgeable, professional raconteurs and true service aficionados who share colourful local history and interesting information. I.e. why Kal Lake’s colour ranges from cyan to indigo, about grape farming, wine and the wine industry, extinct volcanoes, “The Ditch”, the price of real estate, Area 27, the Syilx Okanagan people, and local legends – not just your golf handicap! :)

WHY SHOULD YOU GUIDE OR DRIVE FOR OUR TOUR AND TRANSPORTATION COMPANY?

We believe whoever you choose to work with, you deserve the best. Most importantly, you deserve personal fulfilment.

We’re looking for exceptional people, the right people, people who are self-motivated by the inner drive to produce the best results, people who want to be a part of building something great.

In our opinion, people are NOT our most important asset. The RIGHT people are. The right person has more to do with CHARACTER TRAITS AND INNATE CAPABILITIES than with specific knowledge, background, or skills.

Simon Sinek said, “Great companies don’t hire skilled people and motivate them, they hire motivated people and inspire them.” We have our hearts set on becoming a “great company”, consequently we need motivated people as our Wine Tour Guides and Shuttle Drivers. The required caliber of teammates is very high as we continuously pursue top ranking.

Perhaps a little brusque or insensitive in his delivery, but the sentiment couldn’t possibly be more true than expressed by U.S. Army Delta Force Founder Colonel Charlie A. Beckwith, “I’d rather go down the river with seven studs than with a hundred sh*theads.”

This is not the place for pitiful, timid, ineffectual, fainthearted, half-hearted, wishy-washy, time-wasting, lazy, cowards with an unwarranted sense of entitlement. It’s okay if those are your character traits – just avoid this place.

You should guide for our tour company if you like to have fun, enjoy life, be an Okanagan ambassador, enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people, and not be micromanaged or tolerate unnecessary foolishness.

Our typical customers are on vacation wine touring, golfing, skiing, celebrating life events, getting to and from the airport, and here to enjoy the time of their lives.

Tour guides are often the only authentic interaction a traveler has with a local.

ABOUT YOU

As far back as you can remember you have demonstrated an obsession for delivering absolutely exceptional customer service and hospitality. “Above-and-beyond” is intrinsically in your DNA. You can hardly help yourself from helping people. To you, being authentic and caring is simply your normal.

You have been dedicated to making everything you touched the best it could possibly be. Your moral code requires building excellence for its own sake. Your work ethic is exemplary! You’ve been complimented, commended, and cheered! You may still have the testimonials, trophies, or plaques.

You’re likely a strong leader in your own right. You’re not afraid to contribute, even debate or argue. At the end of the day, your highest priority is the common good of the organization, not your own interests.

If you’re convinced you have most of what it takes, we’d appreciate the privilege of hearing from you.

What sets you apart from the average mediocre person? Now is the time to break out the accolades, testimonials, references, plaques, and trophies.
