7449BR - Truck & Transport Mechanic

Halifax Transit is inviting applications to create an Eligibility List for the position of Truck & Transport Mechanic in the Transit Fleet division. Join the team of approximately 130 other Truck and Transport Mechanics, Body Mechanics, and Hostlers who work to maintain a reliable fleet of buses used to serve a community of approximately 400,000.

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Transit Fleet, the Truck and Transport Mechanic will be responsible to perform maintenance work ranging from standard brake jobs, to engine rebuilds on transit's fleet of over 346 buses. The fleet includes over 263 40-foot conventional, 47 60-foot articulating, and 36 para-transit buses.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Truck & Transport Mechanic will perform scheduled and non-scheduled repairs on the fleet of buses to manufacturer and regulatory standards (Motor Carrier Act, UARB). Duties will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Diagnosis and repair of Electrical, Air, Steering, Breaks, and Drive Line systems.
  • Identify and document any repairs as required using Halifax Transit work order systems.
  • Follow all OH & S regulations and Halifax Transit safety policies.
  • Use of computerized tools for diagnosing and repair of fleet systems.
  • Use of a variety of shop equipment to assist in performing repairs.
  • Other duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Must be a licensed Truck and Transport Red Seal Mechanic; applications from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year registered apprentices, or recent (Anyone that has graduated from the traded of Truck and Transport mechanic within the last 5 years at the time of applying for the posting.) graduates with 2 year diploma in the trade and 1800 credited hours may also be considered
  • Grade 12 or equivalent education and experience.
  • Two (2) years' experience in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver's license, with a good driving record.
  • Technical/Job Specific Knowledge:
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have own hand tools.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills

PLEASE NOTE: Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

PLEASE NOTE: An Eligibility list will also be established from this competition. Vacancies that are not filled internally will be filled from this Eligibility list. The list will be created and is effective for 6 months and may be extended, as required.

Please note - The successful candidate must attain certification in Emergency First Aid within the first six (6) months from hire date. The Employer will bear the full cost of certification requirements .The Emergency First Aid certification must be maintained while employed in this position.

Applicants must be able to wear respiratory protection during tasks that create a respiratory hazard. In the case of a tight-fitting respirator, the employee must maintain their respirator seal interference free. This means refraining from having any object or material on their person that would interfere with the seal or operation of the tight- fitting respirator.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full time.

HOURS OF WORK: Halifax Transit is a 24/7 operation offering shifts to fit a variety of life styles, creating work life balance. New employees can expect to start on backshift (11:30 pm - 7:30 am); a shift schedule and days of the week will be confirmed at the time an employment offer is made. All shifts must work holidays that fall on regular scheduled work days.

SALARY: Red Seal: $35.75 per hour (plus shift premium) as per the Collective Agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 508 and Halifax Regional Municipality. Shift premium of $2.00 per hour for shifts after 3:30 pm.

Apprentice: Starting rate is $32.10 per hour as per the Collective Agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 508 and Halifax Regional Municipality. Shift premium of $2.00 per hour for shifts after 3:30 pm. The rate is increased once proof of completing a block is submitted. The top rate for apprentice is $33.69 per hour. All blocks and red seal exam have to be completed to obtain the mechanic top pay.

WORK LOCATION: Ragged Lake Transit Centre, 110 Grassy Lake Drive, Halifax NS and Burnside Transit Centre, 200 Ilsley Avenue, Dartmouth, NS.
