Street Cleaning Operator (2 Temporary – up to 11 months)
Engineering & Public Works Department

The City of Victoria is recruiting 2 people to join the Public Works team to support maintenance activities associated with overnight sheltering. As a Street Cleaning Operator, you will respond to calls for service and work collaboratively with Parks, Bylaw Services and/or Police to remove and dispose of refuse, discarded, or abandoned items and clean and wash areas as needed. You will operate a variety of related power equipment and vehicles and perform general labouring function in Public Works - Street Cleaning operations. POSITION FUNCTION
Operate a variety of street cleaning equipment and trucks for the purpose of cleaning sidewalks and streets and collecting / disposing of refuse.

KEY DUTIES
Operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers and trucks for cleaning city streets, sidewalks and bus shelters; operate a crane to empty litter receptacles; operate refuse packers following prescribed route to remove and dispose of refuse; shovel and load debris from sweepers.

Operate various hand and power equipment such as power washers, back pack blowers, brooms and rakes to clean sidewalks; remove graffiti from public areas using various cleaners and chemicals; remove and replace damaged concrete litter tubs; remove snow and ice accumulations by shovelling or applying chemical ice melter as required.

Perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and washing inside and outside of equipment and vehicles; carry out pre and post-trip inspections by checking items according to standard job procedures such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report all repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; complete daily equipment log and time sheet.

Respond to unscheduled or emergency calls such as gravel, cement or oil spills; pick up dead animals on roads or beaches; assist with traffic control as required.

Notify various sections of damage to City property such as pot holes, broken castings and sign or meter posts and graffiti; maintain a record of all areas swept on a master street map.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to a scheduled route or is assigned by supervisor.
Problems such as changes to the route or priority of assignments are referred to supervisor.

Lift and move heavy materials and equipment. (often)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers; packers, pressure washer; single axle trucks and small hand equipment.
Complete forms accurately.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Work and operate equipment safely.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Grade 10.
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
Experience:
2 years of related experience.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

Work schedule: Various shifts, 40 hour work week
$31.78 per hour, Pay Grade 5
