Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

The Civil Law Services Administrator is responsible for all aspects of client and case management in the provision of civil legal aid. The incumbent assesses approximately 500 Legal Aid applications per year to determine eligibility in accordance with the criteria outlined in the Legal Aid Act, Regulations and Commission policies and guidelines. Working closely with clients, lawyers and other representatives of the justice system, the Civil Law Administrator is required to make judgements on individual cases which have financial implications, implications respecting an applicant's family status, and may determine the course of individual client's litigation.

The successful incumbent must have demonstrated knowledge of the legal system and civil law procedures, excellent problem solving and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle a fast paced, high volume workload.

The above qualifications are typically attained by completion of three years of progressively more responsible administrative experience in a legal environment with significant exposure to child protection, family and civil law.
