At the Department of Public Works, we are responsible for building and maintaining a sustainable provincial infrastructure for Nova Scotians. From highways and bridges, to government buildings and registration of vehicles, safety and quality of life are top of mind.


Our Steel Bridges group inspects and maintains Nova Scotia’s 4,100 bridges including steel truss, steel girder, and panel truss bridges.


About Our Opportunity


As the Steel Worker, you ensure quality maintenance, along with the safe, effective and efficient repairs of bridges, overpasses and steel structures in the Province.


You play a critical role in ensuring the safety of our road network, and your safety is our number one priority. You will participate in the Department's safety program, including attending mandatory safety training courses, and assigning in the completion of hazard assessments.


Primary Accountabilities


You will be responsible for:


  • inspecting structural elements for repair and/or replacement;
  • assisting in the assembly of panel bridges;
  • assisting in planning, erecting and dismantling staging and scaffolding; and
  • installing and removing temporary supports.

Utilizing your expert skills, you repair and fabricate bridge components with precision, and complete non-structural welding in compliance with approved standards.


Qualifications and Experience


High school completion plus two (2) years of progressive steelwork experience and training as a fitter/fabricator in an industrial environment is required, or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience.


Training and experience in fitting/fabricating, along with knowledge of proper jacking and shoring procedures is required. A mechanical aptitude is essential. You must be competent as a designated signaler.


You must be able to wear a respirator, work in confined spaces, and work over water at various heights. Rigging and lifting of bridge components is routine; requiring strength and stamina.


Welding knowledge, training, or experience will be considered essential. CWB certifications, Red Seal Welder or equivalencies are considered an asset. A Class 3 driver’s license with air brakes endorsement is also considered an asset. Please note, candidates must have the ability to obtain their Class 3 driver’s license with air brakes endorsement if required. Please include a copy of your current driver’s abstract with your application.


You must be well versed in Department and industry Occupational Health and Safety, and Environmental rules and regulations. Training and/or certification in Fall and Arrest Protection, Scaffolding and Staging, Working in Confined Spaces, WHMIS, First Aid and CPR are further considered assets.


Equivalency


An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies include, but are not limited to:


  • completed related diploma and one (1) year of experience

The Steel Worker worksite is the great outdoors. In this role, there is ample opportunity to travel throughout your assigned area, during various seasons, for 1-2 weeks at a time, and experience exciting challenges daily.


Additional Information


There are two (2) positions based out of Hebbville (Steel Bridge Area) which consists of Maintenance Zones 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35.


Please Note: This is a Temporary Backfill position being posted in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement at the top of Page 85 of the CUPE Local 1867 Collective Agreement. The position is temporary however the end date is unknown at this time. The successful candidate will maintain any current positions held for the duration of this temporary backfill position.

Pay Grade: STL WRKR

Salary Range: $24.72 Hourly
