Your Opportunity:

Working under the general supervision of the Health Information Management (HIM) Supervisor, this position is responsible for accurately coding and abstracting emergency, day surgery and inpatient clinical records. Reviews clinical documentation via paper and electronic resources. Applies National and Provincial Coding Standards in accurately assigning diagnoses and intervention codes (ICD-10-CA and CCI). Must have a good understanding of grouping and weighting methodologies. Consistently ensures that health information remains private and confidential, according to Health Information Act (HIA) and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). Consistently follows AHS privacy and confidentiality policies. Has effective communication skills and maintains professionalism at all times. Will perform other HIM duties. There is flexibility as to the location of this position is within the North Zone. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate may discuss location options with the hiring manager.


As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Familiar with Folio and 3M products. Proficiency with electronic abstracting and computer applications. Thorough knowledge of current Canadian Coding Standards for ICD-10-CA, DAD/NACRS abstracting requirements and strong computer skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, meet deadlines and work effectively with minimal supervision. Testing will be required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

1-3 years recent experience in data collection. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
