Reporting to the Senior Operations Engineer – Roads and Asset Management, the Engineering Technologist – Public Works (Roads) is responsible for technical field and office work of a civil engineering nature at the sub-professional level. This position will be responsible for technical engineering work related to the asset management of City infrastructure including roads, sidewalks, urban trails, bridges, retaining walls, boulevards, slopes, etc. Your duties will include administering condition assessment projects and other technical studies; project management of minor rehabilitation and operations projects; providing contract management of work by contractors and coordination of work by City Forces; assisting with planning, scoping and prioritization of capital works and Operations & Maintenance projects; preparing quantity take-off and cost estimates; performing and reviewing engineering designs and calculations; reviewing capital works, third party utility and development proposals and designs to ensure compliance with City requirements; procuring engineering and contracting services; maintaining liaison with contractors, consultants, municipal staff, and external utilities on related matters; conducting field inspections, investigations and monitoring as required; handling enquiries from the public and others; preparing and maintaining a variety of related records, statistics, reports, standards and correspondence. Performing related work as required.

Qualifications include graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Civil Engineering plus considerable related engineering experience, registration as an Applied Science Technologist preferable; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. An understanding of asset management of municipal infrastructure; Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, installation and renewal/rehabilitation of municipal infrastructure; Sound knowledge of applicable engineering principles, standards, and techniques; of engineering mathematics, and of municipal engineering plans specifications, contract documents and related data. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of budgeting and standard costing procedures related to engineering programs and operations. Proficiency in working with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel. Ability to coordinate engineering projects and to monitor progress and expenditures; to prepare contract specifications and related data for tender purposes and to read and interpret them; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts; to deal effectively through verbal and written communication regarding public complaints and requests; to direct the work of survey and inspections staff on a project basis; and to prepare and maintain records, statistics, reports and related correspondence. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
