Full Description

Reporting to the Manager of Fire and Protective Services/Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief is an experienced Firefighter and will ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the Fire Department, as well as compliance with municipal policies, bylaws, and working with the community to establish good working relationships within the Town’s strategy. This role will provide leadership and management to the Fire Department Team.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, management, coordination, and communication to all Fire Department staff
  • Act as the Town’s Fire Inspector following the Alberta Safety Code Act
  • Respond as required to fire and rescue events in Innisfail, designated rural response areas and for mutual aid requests
  • Act as Chief Officer on scene, or in the appropriate role assigned based on scene requirements
  • Assist in the preparation of annual departmental budgets
  • Recommend, develop, coordinate, and oversee all fire fighter training
  • Coordinate the investigation of fire scenes as required to determine origin and cause, and report to the applicable regulatory bodies
  • Conduct performance reviews and training plans for direct reports and ensure they are completed for all staff
  • Speak on fire safety and prevention programs at public events and with various groups
  • Participate in the development of safe, sustainable, and effective fire and emergency response strategies and systems for the Town
  • Develop and implement recruitment and retention programs for fire fighters

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in fire and/or emergency services, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of five years progressive management experience in fire services area
  • Incident Command System Training Level 200 with the ability to attain level 300 and 400
  • Solid working knowledge of the National Fire Code and legislation relating to fire service
  • Hold the following certifications: NFPA 1001, 1002, 1041 Level 2, 1072, with additional certifications preferred including NFPA 1006, Rope Awareness, Swift Water, VX and NFPA 1521
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including experience with public speaking and addressing audiences at all organizational levels
  • Valid First Aid and CPR including AED, advanced first aid would be preferred.
  • Solid computer experience including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement, and Boat Operator’s License
  • Safety Codes Council Inspector (required) and Investigator (preferred)
