Remember growing up watching hockey games and admiring the Zamboni operator? We are looking for a new member to join our program operations team! Help us create great playing surfaces for the community – from the Brandt Centre and Cooperators ice to Mosaic Stadium turf!

Reporting to the Manager, Program Operations, the Surface Operator is responsible for operating machinery on a daily basis to ensure that the playing surfaces meet or exceed a high standard for all user groups (e.g. guests, customers and the public). The Surface Operator supports the recreational facilities by ensuring that all facility areas are clean, healthy and are considered safe environments for all. Other functions include the cleaning and maintenance of the playing surface, assisting with the sports Facility, and the set-up and take down for public and private functions.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Conduct thorough and proper surface install and maintenance through proper inspections and safe utilization of equipment.
  • Maintaining arena facility cleanliness and safety.
  • Setting up and taking down event set ups as per the service order.
  • Assisting in general repairs and maintenance of sports surfaces, facilities, and equipment.
  • Assisting other trades and engineers of plumbing and heating systems.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Completion of grade 12 or equivalent. A Fireman's certification is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in safe operation and maintenance of equipment such as a Zamboni, turf equipment, forklift, scissor lift, or loader.
  • Knowledge and experience in ice making and sport surface maintenance is an asset – a willingness to learn is a must!
  • Ability to take direction and adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull over 50 lbs, walk long distances, and remain on your feet for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Strong decision making and communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
  • Note that this position is an in-scope position under the RWDSU Collective Agreement. This position schedule will be a combination of days, evenings, and weekends with scheduled shifts varying based on operational requirements.
