TOWN OF HAY RIVER – POSITION DESCRIPTION - WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
IDENTIFICATION:

Status: | Full-time
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Public Works, the Water Treatment Plant Operator operates and maintains the Water Treatment Plant, water distribution system, sanitary wastewater collection system, and waste treatment lagoon system. The Water Treatment Plant operators provide for the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment and treatment processes, and the reliable production and supply of high-quality water for all residential, commercial, and industrial customers by Federal, Territorial & Municipal legislation, policies, and standards.
This position works with various departments in the GNWT and the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board to ensure conformity.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain the water treatment plant system and wastewater systems to ensure the availability of a clean community water supply.
This includes but is not limited to:
  • Operate and monitor the control systems and related equipment to regulate the treatment and distribution of water.
  • Inspect, service, and repair components & infrastructure of the water treatment plant, water distribution system, and wastewater collection systems.
  • Read flow meters, gauges, and other recording instruments to measure water output, consumption levels, and chlorine levels.
  • Maintain and operate the filtering and chemical treatment processes.
  • Monitor the operation of equipment at the sewage lift stations.
  • Monitor sewage lagoon operations and complete daily inspections.
  • Prepare work orders for servicing and repairs.
  • Perform housekeeping of the Water Treatment Plant, Lift Stations, and Reservoir.
  • Conduct inspections of the water treatment plant's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Adjust chemical levels to maintain water quality.
  • Undertake water collection and testing.
  • Test total chlorine at the treatment plant and sites around town.
  • Collect water, THM & sewage samples and send them to the laboratory for testing.
  • Clean and calibrate turbidimeters and chlorine monitors.
  • Replace reagents.
  • Carry out general administration functions of the Water/Sewer system to ensure effective operations.
This includes but is not limited to:
  • Maintain required equipment and chemical inventories.
  • Provide reports to government agencies, departments, and other organizations as needed.
  • Work with the Civil Infrastructure Manager on water licensing issues and reporting.
  • Ensure records are maintained along with keeping a daily log and tracking data.
  • Ensure all Town Bylaws, and Occupational Health and safety policies are followed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:
The following knowledge and skills are required for an individual to be able to perform the duties of this position:
Education and Experience:
  • Class 2 Water Treatment Certificate, Class 2 Water Distribution, Class 2 Wastewater Collection Certificate.
  • 2 years of related work experience.
Job Knowledge Requirements:
  • Knowledge of the Northwest Territories Water Act, NWT Health Act, and Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Demands
The Water Treatment Plant Operator position is physical and the incumbent will be expected to lift, carry and manage equipment and supplies. Work activities may take place inside or outside in all sorts of weather.
Environmental Conditions
The Water Treatment Plant Operator may find the working environments to be busy and noisy. The incumbent must also handle various chemicals and cleaning solvents.
Sensory Demands
The incumbent must also handle various chemicals/solvents which have powerful odors. Skin irritants.
Mental Demands
There are no unusual mental demands with this position.
