About Us


Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.


The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works (PW) supports Nova Scotia’s 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings, correctional centres, and justice centres.


Without our Building Services staff’s proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of government services provided.


About Our Opportunity


As the Engineering Student, you will gain practical experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified Engineering professionals by working on our design projects and energy audits for our buildings. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start your career, gain an understanding of how mechanical design or electrical design works for buildings and also work with our energy professionals to understand how are we reducing our energy consumption and our GHG emissions and watch your contributions come to life as your design gets actually built.


We will provide you with all the required technical and protective equipment you need, and as a bonus, you get to keep the boots we provide you when your work term ends.


Primary Accountabilities


You will assist the Senior Mechanical Engineer or Senior Electrical Engineer in a wide range of duties and have the opportunity to:


  • Visit Existing buildings to understand their issues and determine engineering solutions
  • Complete mechanical design or electrical design for our building renovation projects
  • Complete BIM models and drawings using Autodesk Revit
  • Undertake Energy audits for existing buildings and determine what measures need to be taken to reduce their energy consumption and GHG emissions
  • Participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects which will further enhance and develop your skills

Qualifications and Experience


You are a Bachelor of Engineering student, enrolled in a Mechanical discipline or an electrical discipline.


As the ideal candidate you demonstrate a keen interest in engineering design and CAD design.


You must also be:


  • Proficient in mathematics and drafting;
  • Familiar with AutoCAD or Revit;
  • Organized and able to prioritize your work; and
  • An excellent verbal and written communicator.

The following are considered assets:


  • Familiarity with mechanical design for heating and cooling systems for buildings, or familiarity with electrical design for power and lighting systems for buildings.
  • Familiarity with energy reduction strategies for buildings.
  • Familiarity with energy modelling or energy management software.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.


Working Conditions


  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.
  • May require occasional visits to work sites or provincial offices.

Additional Information


Travel throughout your assigned area is occasionally required; as such, you must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Please include a copy of your driver’s abstract with your application.


One (1) position is available for Mechanical design and One (1) position for Electrical design, located at 1672 Granville Street, Halifax.


This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2023, with an end date of September 1, 2023.


Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $17.25 - $28.12 Hourly
