About Us




The Ministry of Justice is responsible for all provincial correctional and remand centers, young offender programs and community corrections across the province.

The Resolution and Court Administration Services Branch provides a wide range of resolution and court services for people involved in legal disputes. In collaboration with the courts of Alberta, Resolution and Court Administration Services provides various programs and services including: educating and helping Albertans finding solutions for legal issues and navigating the court system, offering programs at no cost or a nominal charge, and administrative support to all courts in Alberta.

Role

St. Paul Provincial Court is looking for an independent and enthusiastic Senior Deputy Clerk with strong leadership and problem-solving skills to join their team.

In this role you will be a senior leader within the Court and Justice Services Division. You will be responsible for contributing to the daily activities that provide effective delivery of all aspects of Provincial Court. Providing guidance, leadership and training to your team will be a critical aspect of your duties.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for overseeing the administration & coordination of the accurate data entry and processing of all pre & post court documentation as well as processing all fine, bail and restitution monies collected.
  • Ensure timely preparation of shift schedules for administrative staff.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of new staff. Thereafter provide training and guidance on all practices and procedures of the Provincial Court Data & Documentation, including how to deal with telephone inquiries from lawyers, correctional facilities, probation officers, police agencies, Judiciary and the public.
  • Overseeing the daily & monthly balancing process, sending appropriate documentation to central finance, and to prepare overage/shortage reports for management & central finance as required.
  • Establish performance standards and deliver progress reviews and formal performance appraisals.
  • Regular communication with Corrections, Police, Prosecution and Judiciary on matters of mutual concern.
  • Keep Court Manager informed of any procedural issues or potential problems.
  • Issue processes on behalf of the Deputy Clerk of the Court as Non-Presiding Justice of the Peace.
  • Release accused on bail orders, explaining items and obligations to the accused and verifying accuracy.
  • Receive and deposit cash received.
  • Review and sign subpoenas (in Province)
  • Respond to numerous inquiries by telephone, fax and in person regarding the posting of bail, custody/release information and bail orders.
  • Travel to and from 3 circuit locations; Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche are operationally required.

  • Have knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court, The Provincial court Act, Criminal Code, Federal and Provincial Statutes, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and other such Regulations and requirements as relevant.

Qualification

Required:

  • High School diploma and at least six years of directly related experience, and the successful completion of the departmental para-legal program.
  • Canadian citizenship to obtain a non-presiding justice of the peace designation.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Assets and preferences will be considered as follows:
  • Related post-secondary education will be considered an asset such as a Legal Assistant Diploma, Paralegal Certificate.
  • Experience with JOIN, and 1 GX will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with accounting and/or finance is considered an asset.
  • Supervisory/management experience within Provincial Court Administration setting is preferred.


Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:

  • One (1) year of experience for one year of education
  • One (1) year of education for one year of experience.

Salary

$2,264.48 to $2,793.49 bi-weekly ($59,102 - $72,910 per year)

Notes

The Senior Deputy Clerk works 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This position will be located at the St. Paul Provincial Court.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
